  • I think the Detroit is better build quality...Plus they had them in the Falcon GT HO's years back...That's if they are the same ones...

    • I was almost sold on the Eaton rear locker but now I'm thinking about this.

What was the install price for the LSD model? And who does them in WA.

Got quoted $2k for rear eaton and $2.5k for front Eaton. So if this isn't too expensive I might even do Front Eaton and Rear auto locker.

On the "annoying" scale, how bad is the clicking around town?

      • I don't think anyone sells them in WA - I got mine from 4WD Systems - see here:

        http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/index.php?id=29

Far cheaper than air or E locker. I'm very happy with mine - let's me go places other Prado's can't follow.

Ticking is only noticeable when turning at low speed like into parking bays or T junctions. When the car is serviced they sometimes comment that there is a noise from the diff that needs looking at (until I explain what it is).

        • Sorry, just realised you asked about installation - I got mine done by a local mechanic. Any mechanic should be able to do it but get a couple of quotes - I got a quote from a transmission specialist and they wanted to charge me a fortune. I think I paid about $300 to get it fitted.

Make sure they get in the replacement gasket before doing the job otherwise you might have to wait. I told the mechanic that did mine that he needed the gasket and he didn't believe me - called me later to say that they would have to keep the car overnight as they had to get the gasket in.

          • So no reliability issues/strength etc obviously?

Would you bother with Eaton front locker after having this done to the back?

No strength issues at all - very happy.

If I had the money I would fit a front locker as well.

                • Was also told to consider Spartan Auto lockers from the Freo mob. Supposedly very strong units these are. Anyone installed one to their prado?

                  • I'm going to get one for mine. I'll pull it all down and, if I get stuck, I'll just take the centre to a mechanic mate and get him to check the preload specs. The rest is quite straight forward.

Dave are you going with 4wd systems or Spartan?

                      • I've been thinking about the Lokka for ages now. In fact since I started this thread in May 2011. Simple, reliable, instal and forget, reasonably cheap and easy to fit.

                        • Aldo from AD Differentials recommended Detroit TruTrac autolocker for the back, anyone had experience with it? Better or worse than 4wd systems version?

                          • Just got mine installed by Scott and Chris at OL in Jandakot (thanks guys!). By now these blokes will be absolute experts on Lokkas! They did install the front E locker as well but this isn't what this thread is about.

My thoughts, just did 100km or so and it turns pretty much as it did before. Yes there is the little clicking but it does not phase me to be honest (the only problem I can think of is how the hell will I diagnose a busted CV joint now!!!)

The only thing I can say about these you will get an occasional clunk (got 2 in 100kms). Both when turning right at the roundabout and accelerating out of it there was a little (0.5 second) delay between pressing the pedal and getting the drive and then a Clunk! First time I thought I buggered something up already but looking on the net I think they call it backlash??? Worse when you press accelerator on then off and then quickly on whilst turning. I know backlash can be adjusted somehow but I think this is the way it's supposed to be. Climbed under the car and checked the slack in the tailshaft - not much maybe 10-15 degrees (car in neutral).

Sounds pretty normal but there are a few of you here with these so you can confirm?

Took it through my local 4wd testing area (near jandakot train station) and the car feels a lot more solid. I'm sure it will be fun when I can actually test it against something more difficult.

                            • Are you sure that's not just the normal tailshaft clunk Piotr?

The tailshaft clunk is more to do with coming to the stop and getting the clunk a second or so after coming to a stop. This is more a driving thing.

I'm guessing you don't have it Barry? Hard to describe but it feels like a small delay between pressing the pedal and car going and getting the clunk just before the car gets going.
