  • Re: The Diff club...

Well, I blew diff and locker #2. We have had over 1.5 meters of snow and I have spent the last 600 miles transporting Dr.'s and essential staff to the local hospital. the last pickup just seemed to be too much. I crippled my truck back home in 4WD and have to figure this out before the 1/2 meter of additional snow we get on Monday.

The only good thing I have working for me is that I have a spare rear carrier sitting in my basement as a spare. I just need to find someone to swap it.

      Ben ,
What size tires a have you got on your FJ,If you are doing that sort of damage maybe they are to big for the diff.
I had a old Holden HQ with FAT tires which I managed to blow about 3 diffs and 3 or 4 axles doing burnouts but I don't think the FJ is capable of burning rubber.

        Ben,

Have you ditched the crush tube and fitted a solid pinion spacer? this modification may help.

Thanks Mick, I will look into it.

I posted back here last night, put the post, well, didn't post!

I have 35's but it was definately the locker that was the problem. Both times I blew my diff was when the locker was engaged and going through a tough obstacle. I will resize to 33's when the Spring off-road season starts.

            Ben,

I think the solid pinion spacer is a good mod, the crush tube style are by their nature prone to allowing the pinion gear to flex and if you have the diff out anyway you my as well get it done. It just makes the diff as strong as it can be (without radical mods; like an axle swap!)

            I guess the 35's don't help...

              Mick,
Is this only for the the rear diff? Or can a similar mod be done to the front diff.?

                Leachy,

Yes the front diff has the same thing; a crush tube style pinion gear bearing spacer.

Not sure if anyone on here has blown a front diff on a 120 :?: seems the CV's a the next weak link in the chain.

If doing a front locker or overhaul I'd certainly do the mod for the small extra outlay while the diff out anyway.

I've got the Prado booked in for a front locker in a couple of weeks. Any ideas on where I might source a solid pinion spacer? The local ARB is doing the locker install.

Apparently you can get them from Repco, or any diff specialist would be able to help you out, I would think; as it's a common mod on any diff build up. Failing that PM Darren.

They are going to replace my rear diff (actually the entire carrier with locker) under warranty, so no mods a of now. I may look into it if don't resize to 33"s

I would doubt that the rear diff cant handle a 35" tyre? With the FJ being a leaf sprung rear I would be checking to see if its getting wrap? caused me no end of issue with the old Lux and doesnt do the diffs good at all putting a lot of pressure on the pinion.

                              Yep Coils.

I didn't regear because I wasn't going to keep the 35's. I talked it over with my mechanic today. I will go down to 33's and put in 4:10 Gears, add a front locker, add the All-Pro kit with a stronger pinion gear, and finish with the cromolly CV axles.

I should never have another breakage again.

I will have a net wear diff with Toyota e-locker of anyone needs one.
