Normally it's the crown wheel and pinion that breaks, not the diff centre.

Of the failures, I'd like to know what % had traction control...

As far as I know all the failures have been the LSD. I have not heard of anyone breaking an open diff where the vehicle has traction control or a locker.

I'm new here and to 4 wheel drives so excuse my ignorance, but is fitting an air locker a guaranteed way of not blowing diffs, if not, is there any mod you can do that is?

No it doesnt guarantee not blowing a Diff. Application of too much power/torque at the wrong time will almost always break something (the weakest part in the drive line). At the moment the weakest part of the drive line appears to be the rear Diff. Replacing it with something else may or may not move the weakest point to a different component. Replacing the current weakest point (Diff) with something better makes the whole drive line stronger because the next weakest component must have been stronger than the Diff.

Richie, it doesn't guaruantee a stronger diff, as i was at the qld meet up sunday what i did notice was the difference between the locked and un locked prado's. the locked prado's just walked over the obstacles slower even though it was lifting wheels it still had traction on the other wheel vs the non locked when losing trction on one wheel usually had to use momentum/ power to get over the obstacles, this is normally when you have a issue, too much power when one wheel looses traction and suddenly finds grip again, Bang!!!!

Peter welcome to the diff club,
I replaced mine with a locker from ARB but unfortunately they found my wheel bearings needed replacing at the same time,$930 per side just for wheel bearings.
It took about a two weeks to get it done. The diff will have to be rebuilt before ARB will install a locker.
In my opinion install the locker, it gives the car the ability to crawl up hills with less damage if things go wrong. Water crossings are easier and I would hate the diff to break a second time.
Bad luck mate and my wife didn't talk to me for weeks either.

Well, as of last Friday, I have joined this growing club!

Climbing a rocky hill (that some Hiluxes, a Navara and Jeep had just gone up) a bang was heard followed by a grinding whirring sound - and my heart sank, having a pretty good idea what it was

Brett (BATriton) was with me and stayed to help remove the rear drive shaft (to remove driving load from the diff) and towed me (with some front wheel drive assistance) back to civilisation. We then went back to my workshop (less than an hour away) and brought my truck to take the Prado away.

There was no shock loading as the ARB locker I fitted a couple of months ago was engaged. I fitted it to give better traction and hopefully eliminate this endemic problem - obviously it didn't work!

Sorry to here about your diff Matthew.

What was the trail like when it went ?

... and I reckon there'd be a few blokes interested in knowing where it failed ..... crown wheel ??

Hope its fixed up and on the road again soon mate.

                          Cheers

this one's got me very interested! i've always got the diff on my mind if i know a wheel is going in the air. figured the locker was the way to prevent it but maybe not!!

Shhhhh, don't let the wife know, i'll loose my bargaining chip!

                              120GXV6, sorry to hear mate.
Is it possible for you to post a few pics of that particular hill climb and the spot when the diff went? I'm really curious because I had twin locks in mine and did not experience any problem.
