might get a price for Toyota to fit supply & fit them, then the diffs will still be under warranty by Toyota
    1) Most dealer workshops do 99% service work, most major mechanical work is subcontracted out. (ie; they'll pull a gearbox/transfer case/diff/head or whatever, send it out and refit it when it gets back)

    2) Read some of the comments on this forum about the quality of the work and customer satisfaction people are getting from dealer workshops... How many other people on this forum would trust their local Toyota to install a diff lock next service...NOT ME!!

    3) Your local Toyota is most likely a franchise (I think they all are??) so "Toyota" can still say "Too bad, not covered" should a diff still fail.
Besides, diff locks are not genuine accessories.

    4) Your dealer will only cover his labour/installation.. you have to prove this caused the problem because first thing he will say is "The locker caused it, go see ARB"

I say go make a noise. It's the squeaky wheel that gets oil, so go squeak. A lot!

i can atest to this (sqeaky wheel)
previously being on the other side of the counter for them.
whether it be toyota or the dealer that pays,
and i have seen alot of times when the dealer pays just to keep
      the water smooth.
but with this topic, toyota should cover the item, not the dealer.

end result, the wheel is oiled. that's all they want.

If the customer bounces back with something unusual, like a metallurgical analysis, Toyota is going to be quite startled and might start to think that they've got a live one here and decide it's cheaper for them to pay up.

        Re the first bit.
Sounds like the australian justice system is modeled or copied off yours...

And the second bit. Same as what I think....

I reckon the system in Oz probably has years to go before it could possibly match our insane levels of corruption and ineptitude here in South Africa.

Only a small percentage of criminals ever get caught and, of those caught, only eight percent (yes, 8%) end up being prosecuted.

It's a free-for-all over here. Like the old Wild West

            Hey Folks,

I'm new to the site and there's heaps of interesting info. I've got a new Prado D4D auto 08 model with traction control, etc. Are these same diff problems still likely with traction control??

            Ben...

              Hi Ben and welcome!

The popular belief is that vehicles with TC will at least be immune to the case where a spinning wheel suddenly finds traction causing the diff to be instantaneously overloaded. With TC you will never have a spinning wheel, so this case can't happen. I get the impression this covers the majority of cases where the diff might break.

However, you will also read in this thread that vehicles with a rear-diff locker have suffered from the dreaded broken diff. In these circumstances, if the diff-locker isn't helping, then neither will TC. Though, I guess one could argue that the diff lock might get the vehicle into situations where the forces on the diff are greater.

FWIW, there are no reports on PP of vehicles with TC breaking their diff.

Enjoy your beast and look forward to hearing from you some more.

              Cheers,
              LFaR.

Traction control seems to significantly reduce the risk of diff failure (By applying the brakes to the spinning wheel there is no, or less, drive line shock when it regains traction)
While I haven’t read of any TC diff failures on any Australian forums a few failures have been reported overseas on 120 Prado and 120 platform vehicles (same 8 inch diff) when fitted with TC.

Have a look in the links section for the UK Prado and Toyota120 (USA) pages and check out their forums for discussion on diff failures.

I think you are far better of with TC than with out it!

                Mick.

Next step - I will get a professional metallurgist report on the failure, as I am sure it is due to the large grain struture in the crown wheel casting as a result of poor heat treatment.

Not the same issue but still I just noticed this afternoon that my rear diff is leaking enough to form a damp spot on the concrete under it and the whole diff casing has oil over it. Seems to be coming from the drain plug seal.

                      $hit Mav,

You're not having much luck mate.
Well not much good luck- but lots of bad luck.

Hope it's nothing serious down the rear end - you have enough dramas with the front end.

Pretty sure that it will just need a nip up Stan. Well I am hoping that is all. I ran out of useable light to do it so I will be under the back tomorrow morning to check what is going on. The good thing is it is real easy to get under there now with the lift kit on.
