  • Yeah keep us posted and include some pics! It's something that never seems to turn out cheaply.:? Seems there isn't much to go on in keeping this from happening. From some reports they seem to go quite easily, yet others have had no probs after years of work.

Interesting thought about the Hilux Gear Boof. That would be very interesting.

    • The thing to remember is what you have done to your diff in the past, just because it didnt blow doesnt mean you didnt stress it, or chip teeth etc. Lockers enable you to keep a steady momentum and stop the spinning wheels crashing down among other things that put stress on diffs.

When I went from 4.3s to 4.8s in the Lux (IFS days) I found the 4.3 cracked and even chipped on a couple of teeth. It had been wheeled hard with and without a locker for around 3 years, and hadnt blown but it may have next trip or 2 years from then who knows. Nemesis from 4wd Action wheeled for 18mths on a cracked c+p with a Lexus V8 and didnt blow it up.

Unfortunately they are one of those things and as I said above imo the crap low range is a major contributor. I have read in here people hitting things in 2nd low. In comparison thats the same as 3rd if not 4th low in my Lux. With the speed these things carry in 2nd low I am not surprised they have a reputation of blowing diffs

      • Hey Boof,

Good to hear what you've done there!

Got some pic's to show but just like them all it looks nasty lol!

Any idea how much lockers are? I hear there in the 4 figure sums!
Still going to go and play either way shouldn't stop fun in the sun!

        • Hey guy's got pictures too not sure how easy to upload pic's here, but really they only look the same as the one's on the first page. What a mess! Amazing Toyota haven't done anything about this mines in the 90series last one's made TX! Thought even someone might of made some C+P wheels strengthened for Prado's would make a killing! Wondering what other axel's might fit on this Prado ummmmm! Anyway I seen the video footage of when it went not one I'm wanting to keep on file lol! Sad Sad day!

          • Turbo there's a few threads floating around concerning uploading pics. However if you're having trouble you can email them to me if you like and I'll post them up for you. Email is in my profile. Just a thought.

An interesting analysis boof. I suppose it does make perfect sense that it may not be one incident that puts the nail in the coffin. Might be a combination of wear and tear that kills them. What that really means for us though is getting to know what situations are going to stress the gear too much. For people like me it means locker school because I have never used them. You wonder though if Toyota couldn't produce an up-specced differential that more serious offroaders could fit.

            • Cheers Iron-Paww! I will do that!

Also my Prado had never really been off road till I got my hands on it , and was allways serviced by Toyota fully !!!!!
Any way guess it was just a matter of bad luck, I know for next time for sure! Wife's nagging me to get A) RACQ and B) A play vehicle like a Hi-Lux, still love the Prado though they are fun!

Mate lockers are great for releiving stress as they stop the lurchng and grabbing that you get when punting up a track open diffed. Its the lurch and grab and spinning wheels hitting the ground that damage diffs.

                • Sorry for the late reply. My PC went to that electronic place in the sky in a cloud of smoke and I had to spend the weekend building another one. Damn Intel cpu cooler made me go frikking mad..... anyhow.

Here are TurboD's photos and geez this doesn't look too good does it. Photo's were massive TurboD! Had to resize em for you.

So, for those of us without lockers going up uneven or rocky slopes? We go as slowly and carefully as possible to avoid any lurching and wheel spins?

                  • Ironpaw its all about learning your vehicles weaknesses and driving to them. You hear a lot of people complain about weak Hilux IFS diffs, I drove mine with 35s and a V8 and never blew a diff. I also drove a lot harder stuff than some of the people blowing theirs up.

When the vehicle lurches forward on crossed up ruts etc you are going from no stress on the diff to a sudden grab on the gearset. This is where I say the low range comes in. My Prado will do 20k in first low its way too fast. Lets say you are crossing up a rut the wheels lift and start spinning if the car revs up to 4500+ rpm which in most cases it will easily you are coming back to ground with the wheels doing 15k or so and then coming to a sudden stop.

With a lower ratio it would be 5 or so ks which makes a huge difference. So for me with ours it will be a case of being very light on the throttle and getting off it once it lifts wheels. Best thing to do is watch it on tracks, (get the wife or a mate to drive it, or watch other Prados attempt things) this will give you an idea of exactly what the car does in certain situations.

                    • Yeah Boof I see what you're saying. I suppose though, at the end of the day you can only do so much if you really want to enjoy your 4WDing. I think for part timers like me it's probably enough to get an idea of when the danger times will be and drive accordingly. Certainly my old Lux used to absolutely crawl in low range first gear. The old Lux's though were certainly work vehicles and not so much of the trendy one you get today. Prado's really aren't work vehicles specifically. Although a lot of people use them as outback company vehicles etc. Makes you wonder what Toyota's original intentions were for the 120. More an on road vehicle with some offroad ability perhaps.

As you say though, I think just learn whats needed for certain terrains to minimise the stress. Foot off when needed, foot down when needed. Not so simple perhaps though. Might need to blow a diff to truly get the hang of it..... :?

                        Hey Guy's Somthing really intresting!

We were at Landcrusier Park in Qld at the weekend nice 4wd park for those in Qld! On our way out of the park we meet up with another 90 series Prado owner sat outside the office ready for a tow home! After asking him what he's done it all sounded so much like the rear diff again clunking noise etc , but the thing is he did it reversing up to his trailer to go home! We figured he could of done it on the way round then finally went on him as he put it in reverse! Well just to know your not safe what ever you do! But that's all part of four wheel driving I guess if you do the rough stuff expect sumthing to break! Anyway I did some medium tracks at Landcruiser and the diff's still going strong! Good luck!

Well that scenario just adds to Boof's theory about prior damage I think TurboD. Very hard to imagine a simple reversing maneuver could crack a diff. Likely it was the straw that broke the camels back. Still a damn pain for the owners though!

I had a good look the other day at one of the new "workmate" wagons that Toyota are now selling. Basically the original Prado with the V8 turbodiesel sitting in it. This one didn't have the bonnet popped up but I can't imagine there'd be much extra space under there..... anyhow.. I wondered about the diffs those use. Surely they'd need to be a fairly high spec to cope with all that torque. I wondered if it might be possible to interchange the Workmate diffs with the Prado ones..... Just a thought.

                          • Re: The Diff club...

Having used diff locks F & R in the 80, and never blowing a diff or even a CV on the track, (Did break a CV once, but that was unlocked and me being stupid ops: ) I will always have them fitted.
Having them fitted just means you can go so much slower over things, much less stress, and as said before, when wheels lift, then drop the stresses are much less.
Also in air lockers, the air system is a closed pressurised air circuit. Therefor activation should not put any air pressure into the diff.
ARB diff locks use a O'ring that can leak at times, when this happens it will pressurize the diff housing if the diff breathers are blocked.
The TJM lockers dont require a O'Ring but I am unsure if they are made for Prado's, and they are only recently come out, so how these will last long term is alittle unknown.
Does the Prado have the same transfer case as a Hilux? Maybe a set of crawler gears would be a good investment as well. Slower is better (mostly) when off road.

Does the Prado have the same transfer case as a Hilux?
As far as I know you can only get crawler gears for the earlier Hilux gear driven transfer cases, late model Hilux and Prados have a chain driven case.

From the US you can get a second transfer case that bolts behind the factory one, it's for the FJ Cruiser so may fit assuming trans tunnel is big enough. It's expensive (very$$) and requires the fuel tank to be shortened 3 inches. Also it reguires center console mods for the second "little"stick.

Also in the US they have a complete rear axle swap available for the FJ cruiser (they have the same diff drama's we do) From memory it's a Dana eight and a half or nine inch diff... I'll post the links when I find them again ops:

This is what I have found also, I have had to use an adapter and an old TC for the gears in my Lux. I am looking into the dual cases at the moment for the Prado but to be honest I cant justify the money for something that is a tourer. Its the same with the diffs, the time and cost to even considering upgrading isnt worth it. IMO if you want to wheel hard retire the Prado to shed for those easier trips and buy an old dunger the hard stuff.

I will however be keeping a close watch on the FJs in the states and seeing what goodies they bring out for them. 8) 8)
