Loose auto transmission lever

Hi,
I have an 05 auto 120 and on the weekend the auto transmission lever lost its resistance when selecting gears. There is no resistance when moving the lever sideways and for example if pushing the lever from D across to 4th it will wobble back to D.
Has anybody heard of this problem before?
My local mechanic has had a look and has referred me back to Toyota. I thought I would do a little research myself.

Edit: I wouldn't be taking it to Toyota, unless you have warranty.

Have a go at fixing it yourself, it's not that hard, otherwise look for a used unit.

I'm so glad I asked the question on Pradopoint.

As previously noted elsewhere, $1010.00 from Toyota, after calling 4 or 5 wreckers in Brisbane the one down the road from work had one for $110.00.
Getting swapped tomorrow.

Ive got a 4speed auto with the "floppy stick problem" and i have tried to source a 4speed shifter mechanism with not much luck.
So Im going to give it a go and crack her open and see whats going on inside

Does anyone know if you can acsess the internal parts without removing the whole thing

So, Does anyone have a preventative fix so this doesn't happen? Perhaps a small hose clamp around the fitting?

Hey Greg

There is a cure and suppose this could also be used as a preventative measure. In one of the links above you will read a suggestion to find a correctly sized drill bit to replace the OME "bullet" onlt cut slightly longer than the original to give it more depth within the housing to prevent breakage. Oh, also cut the internal spring down a fraction to accommodate the longer replacement "bullet". This is what I did to a vehicle and it worked a treat.

Good result, mechanic only charged $77.00 to fix. Total repair $187 inc parts.. So glad I didn't go straight to Toyota!

I wasn't prepared to damage the centre console so I took the car to a mechanic. Once the console is off, the floor shift assembly is very easy to take out. Once out of the car, remove the hinge pin and the top comes off, leaving the innards exposed. Plenty of room inside the box to work if you so desire. My advice- keep trying wreckers til you find the part! I paid $110 for the whole assembly.

hey guys i have had this problem for a while but couldnt be bothered fixing it new it would cost a fortune what is the part called that i asked for from the wreckers if i can get away with it for a couple of hundred i will do it

the floor shift assembly is the part you need. It attaches to the top of the transmission. It is a plastic box with a gear lever hanging out the top!
I contacted the wreckers on Zillmere Rd and they had 2. If you are just at Pacific Pines and are having trouble finding a mechanic, my local guy at Tamborine knows how to do it!!
