Or do they still run the same diffs? I can't recall ever reading about better diffs used in updated later model 120's here before, so I thought I'd ask.

I would imagine that they are still using the same diffs.

Given that the failure rate is around 1% of the amount sold.

There aint no arguing with the fact that its only a small percentage of Prado's that will ever see the dirt.

Not a bad thing when i comes time to look for a 1 or 2 year old one to trade up into though.

Actually it is apparently under .01% of those sold.

It would be interesting to know the percentages of the vehicles with diff problems against the vehicles used offroad and whether there have been any problems with any vehicles used exclusively on road. (All with respect to total sales)

Well you do get a rough indicator. sort of...

The conditions that cause this flex just wouldn't happen on the road.

I don't know about that ... I watched, in awe, this morning (when I had to take the missus out shopping) as a woman in a Hyundai Terrycan decided she didn't want to reverse out of her parking bay. She decided to go forward instead - over a high concrete kerb and garden bed.

She took several goes to get up the kerb - it just kept bouncing her backwards - and when she finally did climb the front wheels up it she took off. The front wheels dropped down the other side while the back wheels hadn't climbed up yet - CRASH - as the belly (and whatever else is unprotected under there) bounced on the concrete. She wasn't quite stuck - so she rocked it back and forwards a bit until she climbed the back wheels up the kerb and then took off.

I reckon it was hubby's car and he'd just forgotten her birthday ops:

Anyway ... that Terrycan took more of a hammering than Russ' Prado on the weekend - :?: :?: :?:

              My 2 cents.

              Cheers

most of the cases on here have been "wheel goes up, tires spins fast, wheel comes down, diff goes bang"

                  that's the short summary anyway!

120GXV6 killed his rear diff (with ARB locker) on the weekend while he and I were out on a trip with the NewHilux.net guys.

I'll leave it to him to post the details.

Sheez Brett .... that's the first time I've heard of one going bang ... with a locker in it.

.... and I'm imagining Matthew was climbing a near vertical wall at the time 8)

Sorry to hear about the diff Matthew ... but now I'm hanging out for the rest of the story

The hill he was going up wasn't that bad Chippy. Unlocked Hiluxes were getting up it ok. I think it was the fact that the Prado was attempting to drive up two rock steps at the same time (as the wheelbase exactly matched the distance between the steps). The Hiluxes, with their slightly longer wheelbases were taking these steps one at a time. The steps where only about 200mm high, but it was about a 30 degree incline
