  • Noisy Clutch

I have a 2003 Diesel Prado that makes a tickiing noise when the clutch in engaged fully. This noise disappears when you depress the clutch a small amount when driving.
Apologies if this has been discussed, i couldnt find it anywhere?

    Murphy 10,
    First, "Welcome to Pradopoint"

Sounds like a dry thrust bearing, don't think I would worry unless it starts to get a lot louder?

    Cheers,

      Hi Murphy, welcome.

It sounds like your thrust/clutch release bearing is rattling on the fork or against the input bearing retainer snout or, because you clutch is wearing (part of normal use) one or a few of the pressure plate diaphragm fingers has/have started to rise and is/are just starting to tap against the release bearing.

I don't know how accessible it is, but a few small dollops of grease where the bearing is held on the fork may fix it. The grease acts like a small cushion and damps out the rattle.

Just looking at the manual, there is no inspection plate or cover that can be removed to get to the bearing, so short of dropping the gearbox you would have to try working with a mirror, torch and a length of wire to get some grease in there.

I am guessing that the bearing itself is OK as the noise goes away when you depress the clutch.

      Paul.

        Noisy Clutch

        Thanks for the responses!
Think i will just live with it for now. Have just returned from a 6,500k trip to Alice Springs via the Simpson and the lived with it! But I did get home and find the water pump had gone! lucky it was at home not out there!

Also did a lot of damage to the sump guards. Looking for ideas on that next!

I have just got back from toyota and found that we have the same problem. Our prado is 2003 petrol, had the same issue makes a ticking noise when the clutch in engaged fully and disappears when depress. Toyota have estimated that the replacement of the thrust or throw out bearing will cost $1025. I hope this is covered under toyota extra care :?

            noisey clutch

hi llamabay , if your extra care is currect, toyota will pay for it but throw out bearing noise is very comman with the 1kz-te engines in both hilux and prados

here in spain we have a lot of problems with the clutch, I have changed it twice and this is covered under toyota extra care, but our problem is when the extra care is finished. I hope so that toyota admit this problem but they say that the new clutch will be improved.

              cheers

Not sure how relevant this is but even though I am pretty new here I will relay my recent experience. I had the exact same symptom with a 2003 Subaru Forester I had. If you even slightly touched the clutch the noise would go away. Turned out that the thruster and clutch were totally gone. Clutch had already started slipping. 75K on the Odo. Lucky the thruster was noisy - which forced me into inspection / replacement.

BTW - Are the Prado clutches Dual Mass ? or is the clutch separate? I have a 6 speed 04 model, recently purchased and there is a small (possibly bearing noise) when in nutural or fully engaged. but the noise is only there when the motor is cold. Once it warms up its not there anymore. And yes, before you all ask - Noise is coming from gear box area - already spent a lot of time under there listening to it trying to figure it out.

                - Anyone know how long a noisy Thruster is likely to last if that is what it is ? Want to do the Simpson in July so am making a mechanical check/replacement list to be done before the trip. If it needs replacing I'll spend up and do it. Have 88K on the clock - guess there is no way to know how good the clutch is?

                Cheers,

                  SPOT ON MATE :!: :!: :!:

I started a topic on a squeky noise to let other members know what my problem was ....

I took the car in first time and they greased the clutch fork

                  http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=1973

but 2 days later the squeak was back , i have only had the car less than 2 months so stuck it back in on warranty to get it sorted before the warranty runs out (toyota dealership warranty of 3 months)

so to cut a long story short ..... i dropped it in monday 9am , picked up again tuesday 3pm , they dropped out the gearbox , replaced my SQUEAKING DRY thrust bearind and i think another bearing , greased the gearbox up and handed it back to me (i love free of charge jobs) , running sweet as honey .

BTW , the car had a new clutch put in a week before i bought it , by the dealership . i dont know if this could have damaged the bearing .

The service manager says the seal was split , and the bearing was dry as !

Just a question : If a thrust bearing is dry, it must be ready for failure as dirt can get in ? if this bearing fails can it damage the gearbox ?

just got my new thrust bearing, paid by toyota. tkstrong looks like you might have the same problem as we have only done 87K on our prado.

                        CLUTCH

                        Hi, new to the forum,

damn i'm sick of that noisy bearing. i had my 03 petrol thrust bearing replaced at 60,000 under warranty and its noisy again @ 110,000. i'll put up with the sound for now but if it needs replacing is there a more heavy duty item that can be fitted? i have been told that holding the clutch in when stationary and in gear is what cause's this but i recon its the big ass boat i pull and push around all the time.

                        cheers, shaun

You guys have done well. I just got my 05 GX back from Toyota today after they have put it's 3rd throw out bearing in it (under wty). The original bearing was replaced at 35 000km, and the 2nd one now replaced 22 000km later.
The prognosis on the one they removed yesterday was "noisy dust shield".
I was far from happy when I dropped it off the other day and had a good whinge about it, got the usual "sorry sir, we are not aware of any other prado's with this problem"

Unfortunately, the service guy couldn't give me any technical reason why it keeps happening.

                            clutch

i have a similar problem..but not a rattly noise..rather a squeeshy noise..like a balloon pump when u depress it. sent it to toyota agent to get it forks greased and its fine after that. However it came back again after 10000km...dont tell me it needs greasing every service?

Sounds like a common problem. I had the same squeekish noise in my '03 @ 112,000 and it was the throw out bearing. Got it replace under used car warranty.
