  • Auto transmission lockup switch

I have recently fitted a lockup switch (2nd-5th) for my petrol auto. Why did I fit one. My previous 4wd had the ability to lock the transmission and my biggest disappointment with the Prado due to its high gearing was the constant locking and unlocking of the torque converter particularly when towing but even without towing on undulating roads. During my discussions with other Prado owners most indicate this is a possible issue however many just say its an auto I just drive it and let it do its own thing. I have noticed the majority of those I have spoken with do not know the difference between when an auto changes gears and when the torque converter locks and unlocks. I acknowledge it is difficult to tell the difference. I fitted one despite the expense of $400 for not much more than switch because driving with the torque converter unlocked can cause a lot more wear and overheating of the box. Also I suspect there must be a fuel advantage if used correctly. The unit consisted of 3 relays a switch and resistor plus wiring loom and took me 2 hours to fit without any major issues. 2 wires need to be cut and soldered on the ECU.
What is the result so far after about 1000kms and about half towing 2.5 tonne with a GCM of 5.2 tonne. With the switch on, the vehicle changes gears when required but the torque converter remains locked. Downshifts appear to occur later or at lower speeds (revs). When towing on undulating roads it is nice to have it remain locked but this requires more accelerator going up hills. My experience is that autos climb better with the trans unlocked. eg unlocked in 5th will climb better than locked in 4th. I haven't noticed any improvement in fuel consumption but I need to do more testing. I get 5kpl towing the above rig at 90 kph and 8-9kpl at 100kph on the road with an empty vehicle and around 7kpl around town. Is the switch worth it. Too early to say, but for me initial impressions are I like it. It does what I expected and is great cruising without towing. If you are a serious offroader then having it available on 1st and Rev would be very useful in steep conditions. Hope this is a help to someone.

It would def be nice to have in first in off road situations. Do you need to turn it on and off during stop start traffic or just turn it on (lock) and leave it on regardless?

As it doesn't work in first I assume as long as the gearboxes changes down to first when coming to a stop it won't stall?

I know with the valve body change and torque converter lock up in first gear that the vehicle will stall if you come to a stop.

With the switch on there is no difference when driving. The box still does its own thing. When it changes gears I can only assume the ECU unlocks momentarily. Changes seems similar but under some conditions can be slightly abrupt. Nothing I am concerned about.

Forgot to mention about engine braking 2nd to 5th. I think it is better but jury is still out. Also switch is on left of steering column in spare switch hole. This is good for convenience to operate but needs to be where you can see if it is on or off. Switch is rocker with red light. As I said before when cruising in 5th it is great when not towing, box just stays locked but requires more input from fast pedal on hills. This may or may not be detrimental to fuel consumption - only time will tell. Also must know what you are doing (not for wife) and be careful at all times not to strain the engine at low revs. It will change down but requires more force from accelerator or a shift of the stick to make it do so.

Auto transmission lockup switch and fuel consumption

I am currently 8000kms into a caravan trip. The following is my data for the trip and my comments on the auto trans lockup switch.
Firstly if you don't understand what this switch does then you should find out and have a clear picture of what it does. At the start of the trip I was a little disappointed with the switch but as the trip progressed I became more and more optimistic and now I wouldn't be without it. It is simply fantastic particularly if you are towing a heavy van. It is impossible to tow even a light load in 5th gear with the torque converter locked except on dead flat ground. This results in a rapid rise in auto trans temp to above 100 deg C. With the switch locked the temp runs around 70 deg C on a 25 deg day. I am towing 2.5 tonne with a GCM of 5 tonne and drive mostly between 80-90 kph. The vehicle is a 2005 petrol auto. The data is measured on a scangauge and checked with real figures at the pump. Over 8000kms was using 4th locked (30% of running) into a strong headwind and 5th locked at all other times I have averaged 17.5 l/100 using ULP(?E10). About 5000 kms is towing with 2000 doing light 4wd work in very steep country. The rest is lazy running around town and visiting tourist attractions (If I sit on 80 kph I get 10-11 l/100 with a loaded vehicle). During the trip I have spoken a lot with other Prado owners and the diesel owners are mostly getting 15-16 l/100 towing a similar weight at the same speeds whilst the petrol owners are around 20 l/100. I cannot say for sure that the lockup switch improves fuel consumption but it would appear so. It certainly keeps trans temp down considerably and allows towing in 5th without flogging the transmission by not having the transmission locked. This in itself means less wear and tear and a 10% improvement in consumption (the difference between towing in 4th and 5th). I could go on with more data but will keep it short and will post again at the end of the trip. Hope this is a help.

Lots of words there GMagpie, do you have any photos of the installation you have on your rig?

Sorry if to many words but there is a lot to say. It needs to be digested to get the full appreciation of how good this switch is when towing. I dont have any photos but there are plenty on the web under wholesale automatics. It took me 2 hours to install and is not difficult. Only thing I would do differently is place the switch where I can see if it is on or off. At the moment it is in a spare switch position to left of steering column.

The above seems to contridict itself, you indicate running with the convertor locked will result in rapid overheat, but then state with the switch locked, ie convertor locked, you can run at 70 deg?

I think he means in normal mode when towing the auto will automatically unlock, causing slippage in the torque converter = more heat, in other words its impossbile to tow in top gear with the converter locked, unless you have the over ride switch.

I am not convinced the auto unlocks quite that easily, but an overide switch seems like it would be a good thing. Pity you cant lock it in LL with an overide when you touch the brake to help in down hill decents, that would be enough for me to bit the bullet and get one.

                        Cheers Andrew

Andrew.... I was watching one of those 4WD TV episodes that also had a section from Wholesale Automatics The ad was about this Torque lockup convertor and from they said it does "exactly" that in LL.... It locks it in LL for better downhill control
Probably best to ring to confirm though

I have it on my to-do list to drop into Wholesale Automatics as I want to checkout their auto trans temp gauge kit. Hopefully I can get there in the next few weeks.
