    Just checked their website and it confirms you can lock up 1st gear, but only if you get the upgraded valve body as well as the lockup kit.

    No prices, so that will be interesting to see the $$ for this one.

      The following is the response i got from Wholesale Automatics. He does confirm you need the upgraded valve body to lock up 1st gear. The pricing is for a changeover and for a 90 series, but at least it is indicative

          Just saw this episode on 4wd TV tonight. Wholesale Automatics rep said it was an easy 1 hour process that would help out with downhill exhaust braking.

          Sounds like a good idea, but the pricing in the posts above puts it out of my reach ATM.

              TQ lock up switch

              Owned my 120 for a couple of years now, I don't post very often but I have fitted the Wholesale Auto's TQ lock switch to my bus and find it extremely useful bit of kit. Now, my camper only weighs in at 1.4 t ready to go and the other trailer I tow weighs in at about 600 kg full of model aircraft, but my experience of the standard setup is one of dismay at the ease at which the tranny unlocks. But after fitting the unit to my bus, I am in-love again. It was worth the 400 smackers that it cost, took my about 2 hrs to wire it up, took an all day trip to work out the best way of using it. Now it's almost as good as a manual to drive. I will say that I try not to let the the ecu change down to 4th if it needs to, I try to anticipate the load and change down myself so the vehicle is not under as much load, and when coming into towns i turn it off. It has definitely improved the engine braking. The fuel consumption i dunno, I think its better maybe. We did 850 ks from Mt. Gambier to Walwa on the Murray via Melbourne and the Hume H/way and averaged 13.2 L/100k which equals about 21.5 mpg. Not to bad considering I owned a Petrol 80 series for ten yrs. I fitted the switch on the left side of the steering col but find that position a bit hard to reach so I'm gunna cut a hole in the centre console and mount it there. Somebody needs to come up with a neat switch that can be mounted on the shifter, that would be good. So to anybody looking to fit one go for it but i will say if you dont understand how the TQ and transmission work don't fit it off as i reckon you could miss use the switch and damage the tranny. The other thing I gunna do when the current 32" tyres are worn out I'm going back to the std size 265/65r17 as gearing up with taller tyres certainly hasn't done me any favours except correct the speedo. I now have a second set of rims with 32" muddies on for bush trips so I can install std size H/way tyres for road running. Cheers Marty

                Good info guys, thanks. Very interesting for me as I tow a 6.5 metre (21ft) boat with my 2008 GRJ120. The boat on the trailer runs out at 2400kg and the Prado tows it well, a bit slow up the Toowoomba range but that is expected. The Tq converter lock up is real interesting as I would like to be able to prevent it unlocking as much. I must say though that it doesn't unlock as much as it could so is probably a happy compromise. Not sure I would spend $400 to get it though.

                  Yes mate $ 400 is a lot but along side the rear locker its the best money I have spent. any way its entirely up to you

                    Especially when it's just a switch, a relay and some wire - I'm surprised nobody has posted up the wiring diagram for fitting one. Can't be more than $40 to $50 in parts.

                      Someone please post the wiring diagram... We should get this mod going on the DIY side of things ASAP.
                      $400 is rediculous for a switch... Its the only reason I havent done it yet.

                        Its actually 4 relays, couple of resisters, a heat sink a fare bit of wire and all the instructions on which pin no to cut and shut and of course the switch. Yes it still is quite expensive but compared with towing without it its still worth every cent. Wholesale auto have to research all the necessary requirements and its there expertise in research development and backup if something goes wrong that we use to make our vehicles better so i figure that user must pay. Besides it only hurts until you write out the cheque once that bit is out of the way u never think about it again. I guess its a matter of priorities i reckon all the engine chips are a rip off for what u get for $1000 + so its the same deal, horse's for courses Cheers Blacky
