  • Rear diff rumble after oil change

    Hi all,
Did a full 120k service on the prado last weekend including gearbox and diff oils and now the rear diff had a rumble kind of noise when turning slowly (anything under 30km/h or so). I used mobil synthetic oils (75w90 in front diff and gearbox's) and mobil 1 syn gear lube ls 75w90 in the rear diff. Has anyone had a similar noise happen? i'm guessing its the lsd clutch's maby they don't like synthetic oil?. Will go back to mineral oil if this is the problem.
    Cheers.

Agree with slackdog, you need specific lsd oil. Even then lsd oils aint lsd oils. Used an lsd oil in a patrol dif and had to change it to a mineral based oil.

ive always used LS 90 on all lsds i have had in my 4wd, on rear diffs, as well as front non lsds, have never had any trouble with diff noises, i would be getting that checked out, just be make sure. ls 90 in a non lsd will not hurt an open diff, it just has an additive to help with the operation of the lsd centre, cheers samo

Thanks guys, yes its a LSD oil might go back to mineral (thought i was doing the right thing with synthetic!). i used to run castrol lsx90 in the hilux with no dramas.
          Cheers.

I changed the oil to castrol lsx90 (mineral lsd oil) and all was good for around 100ks now the rumble is back when turning. I might have to add a additive maybe?.
              Cheers

If it is a noise when turning it sound so much like clutch chatter. Be really careful with additives as most are for open diffs Not LSD

Does anyone know what kind of diff oil does toyota use? My 80k service is coming up and perhaps i should buy this oil for my mechanic as the 120 seems to be very picky when it comes to diff oil

My 2008 d4d gxl had this noise basically from new, the fix was to go to an 85 /140 LS oil at around the 20,000km service from memory, 85,000 kms now & it hasn't been there since, so get yourself some 85w140 limited slip oil, I would stick with the synthetic stuff but it shouldn't matter if it's not, I'd be surprised if it doesn't fix your issue.

Really, you have one of 2 choices. Contact a Toyota dealer and get the correct answer or check the car booklet, it tells you the correct info there.
The only thing I let toyota do these days is to change the gearbox and both diff oils and transfer case oil every 20,000 klms, and this is done at this interval due to towing a 2+ tonne van. Have towed over 100,000 klms, and total reading is now over 180,000 klms and NO box or diff problems so far. Just make sure you pay the little extra and have the auto box done twice, first is to totally flush the cooler and box of old oil.
Fresh oil if FAR cheaper than repairs, just check cost of parts, plus labour to change / repair diffs or auto gearbox.
