  • Gearbox Drain Plug Washer

    Hi,

I recently changed my auto gearbox oil. The check plug has a slight weap as I re-used the old gasket. Can I use fibre washers or the same gasket as is on the engine sump plug or do I need to get a genuine aluminium crush washer?

Also, will thread sealant (non drying type) affect the gear box oil if I use on the last thread of the plugs?

I use this stuff on the driff and transfer drain and fill plugs. It does the job and I don't have to excessively tighten the plugs to get a seal.

    Thanks,

Mate, just grab another aluminium washer from your Toyota dealer or alternatively from a spare parts dealer such as Bursons / Repco, I'd avoid any thread sealer unless you are very careful to keep it out of the transmission. Out of interest, a few questions.
    1. How many kms has your vehicle done & what did the oil look like (ie. was it dark or still looking good)?
    2. Have you had a transmission cooler fitted? Do you do much towing?
    3. What type of oil did you put back in?
My reasons for asking are I have the same model which has now done 85,000kms with a fair bit of towing involved albeit nothing over about 1.5 tonne & as this is my first 4x4 with an auto I am a bit nervous about how long these things last. (I'v had 2 4Runners & an 80 series, all manuals).Toyota have no service interval for the Auto to be serviced & I haven't had an extra cooler fitted. Apparently these transmisssions run whats called a "world spec" oil or something along those lines & basically lasts the life of the transmission if I'm not mistaken. I'm not real keen on this but am a bit nervous about getting the auto serviced & having just "any" old oil used in it.
Any thoughts from anybody appreciated, sorry if I hijacked your thread but thought it was all relevent.
