I am just planning to do all four breathers on my prado manual. Reading through all these threads I am still a little confused with the transmission some have said it is not threaded and can't remove so can I get a answer from somebody who has done a manual as to yes it is a case of unscrew and screw in new one. Also could I get exact location to the transmission and transfer. I believe the transmission is located on driver side top near shift stick. Do these two have short hose on them or just a release valve like year diff.
Cheers
Leigh

Im in the same position as Leigh, Have done front and rear diff breathers. Now looking at gearbox and transfer case breathers, found 1/8 hose belonging to transfer case on bellhousing easy enough, then in search of gearbox breather. After hugging gearbox for a while with no luck removed center console to try find from the top. And found it behind shifter.
It appears to be a compression fit (press fit). has anybody extended this breather? I have two options that i can see, pop cap off and try clamp hose to whatever is left (bit dodgy) or remove four bolts and pull gear lever off and drill out breather and tap thread.
I had better add that mine is a 06 td manual.2006 GXL 1KZ TD Manual

I had a mate tell me the other day that the fuel tanks have breathers as well
He said I would find them under the car near the tanks...

I have just extended breathers for Diffs, Gearbox, Transfer case and fuel tank.
The Diffs are prety well explained and photographed in this thread so wont repeat.
I will post a couple of pics of the SS bracket and breathers in engine bay and manual gearbox/transfer case
I also extended fuel tank breather to filler cap as for the sake of a short amount of 1/4" hose (which I used for other breathers anyway) and an hour it wouldnt make it worse.
I removed tank breather and short hose from y piece and replaced with fuel hose which I ran up to filler and refitted breather
Cheers

I just did the diff, gear box and transfer breathers. Diffs are easy.
For the rear, unscrew it from the diff, remove dust cap with a screw driver and then fit some 6mm ID hose over the top along with a hose clamp, remount breather in diff and run the hose through a grommet to the inside of the car. I went into the jack compartment.
For the front, just get a 6mm vacuum hose connector and 6mm ID hose and extend it from just beside the battery by replacing the valve with the connector.
For the gear box/transfer what a pain in the ar$e!!! The easiest way, after lots of struggling, was to remove the drivers side wheel and the rubber under the wheel arch. The gear box was relatively easy, again just pulled off the dust cap and pushed 6mm ID hose over the end of the valve with a hose clamp.
The transfer case was a PITA! I ended up pulling the entire hose (it's only about 10cm long) off and mounting a new 6mm ID hose. I used a cable tie to make sure it won't slip off and ran it through the existing hose mount. There's not enough room to do up a hose clamp - after much struggling, I can guarantee it is impossible!
Both these breathers then run up the back of the engine.
My hands and arms are covered in scratches from these two breathers and took almost 3hrs of stuffing around. The diffs can be done in an hour, and no special tools or skills are needed. Just a 14mm open ended spanner, a flat screw driver, scissors and the hose, a hose clamp and some cable ties.
The valves are definitely not one way, the valve is really just a dust cover that will stop most of the grime getting in (if they function and don't get stuck/blocked).
Thanks for all the previous experience it definitely saved me a lot of time!2004 GXL V6 Auto, 2" Dobinson/Bilsteins, Rola Alloy Rack, AJ's Side steps, Safari snorkel, Sidewinder dual battery, SSB agm battery, Milford cargo barrier, Tigerz11 awning with Korr LED lights, Ironman Underbody Protection, IPF 900XS with 55w HID kit on Sovereign bar, LED Reversing/Work light, Uniden CB, Diff & Transmission Breathers, CouplerTec rust protection, BFG 265/70R17, Tekonsha brake controller and tows a 2011 CUB Daintree LE.

I've just run the breather for the transfer case but for the life of me I can't find the one for the AT. Mine is a 2004 Auto Diesel gxl.
Also the little y thingy doesn't have barbs on it and the hose isn't held on by any clamps. Is that ok like that? The new hose seems a bit loose compared to the old one
