I also had that inrush of air when I took off my rear diff breather ... and it had me a bit worried that the vacuum was going to help water find a way in through the seals.

I like the idea of something that breathes freely and allows the air pressure to remain the same as the outside pressure.

I currently have the standard Toyo breathers jammed in the ends of the extended hose .... but I have also managed to pick up a few model aircraft air filters ... so I can do this ..............

Luv ya work MJRandom

Well I've been in the shed to dig out my old breathers. Gee they are crap arn't they?
I can just suck through one if I'm very gentle but not the others. Cheap and nasty. No wonder you guys are getting noises when you crack your diff plugs.

I also found several others from previous 4wds, all much better. Best is from a Rocky TD.. I can just about breathe through it and when I pulled the cap of it, it even had a little wire wool looking filter in it.

For my breathers I have used pneumatic line and push lock fittings. On the ends of these I've used pneumatic valve filter/silencers.
(Those that work in mechanical engineering/maintenance will know what I'm talking about)

PS:... eeewww oily diff oil taste in mouth...

Talk about an education! Great research guys and thanks for taking the time to get oil on your lips... all that sucking and blowing... enough of that now.

Looks like I have another mod on my mod - but reading about all that testing... that was priceless! .

With all the scientific testing, it seems there is no doubt that these one-way breathers would be best substituted with filters for two-way breathing.

        Cheers,
        LFaR.

I am just in absolute awe Mick, of your determination to seek out the truth ... no matter what the obstacle.

The level of dedication required to stumble out to the shed, in the middle of the night, to locate one of the original breathers, to suck and blow and ingest quantities of diff oil ... all in the pursuit of knowledge.

.... and all so that knowledge could be shared with your fellow Pradopointers :!: We salute you.

Yeah ... it may sound tongue in cheek ... but seriously Mick ... what a great way to put this one to bed. Well done.

          Cheers

Did some more investigation today. I checked again the breather from the rear diff that I reported on yesterday. No matter how gently I sucked I could not get anything through this breather. I pulled it apart. It was clean. It consisted of a neoprene washer, a very light spring and a uniform seat. It can only be either open or completely closed.
I checked the breather on the front diff; the plastic bodied one high up in the engine bay. Blowing it opened up. With light or hard suck it passed a small amount of air. Now I am puzzed. I did not want to pull it apart for fear of breaking the plastic. I don't know if it had dirt in it.
At this stage I have extended the rear diff breather and put a small filter on it. I have left the front one as is.
No I did not go out and check this at night. Goes below zero here at night!

Thanks to Ben too for the part number of the adapter that fits the rear diff, I am sure by now there are 20 Japanese technicians wondering about the high rate of failures of this fitting on 90s Camrys given the demand on spares!!!

Had some time today, so I visited 2 fourby shops who do competition rigs. I asked them about lifting the breathers, both confirmed that in their rigs the breathers were not raised. The problem arises only when the vehicle gets stuck, but then there are more things to worry at this stage.

Confirmed, the Toyota stock is a one way valve and not a breather, but is sufficient to be reattached if the hose resides in the engine bay. This is a small insurance and peace of mind. As for water coming thru the seals they said you gotta be pretty unlucky for that to happen.

Therefore I'm going to stick the stock valves on the extended breather hose. Sorry if I opened a can of worms...
                      Cheers,

Yes thats them, mind you I just have the plastic non adjustable ones.

I'm just getting around to do this and was going to just go without until I looked again at the rear diff. Nowhere in the history can I find the reference from what you guys have done so ......

.... is the rear breather 1/8" or can you tell me where you sourced the threaded connector from?

                          Andrew

AJ, you can source all your parts from these guys.

                            1 - www.purplepig.com.au

2 - EnZed or Pirtek carry them too.

(Refer page 3 of this thread, where I've posted)

PM me if you need further help.
                            Cheers,

Thanks to Ben for the part number but you will need to order a Toyota Camry Fuel Line Union Part # 90404-51026 to replace the rear diff breather. It has a 1/4" hose connector, run 1/4" fuel line from there up into the filler area or up into the engine bay. Look at Ben's post on page 2 of this thread.

Or you could also use one of these (either part will fit). I've got the right angled one fitted to mine.

Its 1/4" Male fitting with a 1/8" hose, just clicks inside of the plastic end.

                                Cheers,
