I'm guessing the lithium grease or whatever they are using isn't upto the job. I had the same thud happening about 10k ago and used a good thick grease and haven't had a problem since.

Same,
05 GXL 5 spd Auto 35000k's, everytime stop on an incline(more noticable) the 'metal to metal' clunk occurs. Usually if you brake quickly to a halt the Auto Transmission will drop down to second gear, when you stop completely it then transfers into first gear(after about 2-3 secs).
It is then the clunks occurs, it is the tailshaft that causes the problem. Toyota replaced tailshaft once they experienced the sound, under warranty. That fixed it completely, happy days.

All
I have just done a bit over 20K and mt dealer finally agreed to replace the tailshaft as per the service bulletin under warranty.
So far so good - no sign of the thump since it was replaced last week!
All good

Just to add to this post, I had one of the first shipment D4D's from end CY06. I have been battling my dealer for quite a while on this one as the service bulletin was along time coming for this exact model.
Greasing helped but was not a long term solution. Always came back within weeks. I kicked up a fuss at one stage and got a shaft from a new one off the showroom floor put in to mine but still no change.
Last month after complaining again at my regular service, they advised that the service bulletin was out and they ordered and fitted new shaft (I even crawled underneath to make sure it was there).

Does anyone have reference to a <REMOVED> number that i can refer or pass onto at my local dealer - they keep greasing it - but they reckon there is nothing wrong and dont want to replace it.
I dont have another dealer close by....
Really annoying me of late ....

You know it is an odd thing but I had the thump from new when I picked the car up last Nov 07. However the thump disappeared for a while without anything being done to fix it. Then this week I noticed the car doing it again. I can only think that it is somehow temperature related cause during the colder months the car has not done it but this week the temps have suddenly shot into the mid 30's and the noise is back.Roll on the 2010 Pradopoint GTG
