Guys, i have the same thing, mine came back and the dealer told me also it is in the too hard bin at this time with toyota, however i did get him to re grease the shaft and it has gone again, apparently you can also over grease the shaft too much and make it worse, they reported on mine at the 10000klm service that it had no grease, anyhow i just told the dealer it will be normal item now on each service to clean and re grease.
After owning my Jeep if this is the worse thing i have i will be very happy. Mine is definately in the tail shaft, anyhow for now all good again.

All three Prado's I have had, a 2000 90 series td manual, a 2003 120 series td auto and my current 2007 D4D td auto have had the same problem. (They are a great vehicle otherwise )

My latest vehicle that has only 4000km on the clock since purchased in June, started doing it after only a few hundred km. When I asked the dealer about it, they told me it was the new auto gearbox had fuzzy logic software and the fault would go away if I drove the vehicle harder

Back when I had the 90 series and I could comfortably crawl around under the vehicle because of the extra ground clearance in that model, I noticed this very problem begin and saw how dry the slip joints were.

The dealer pleaded ignorance so I purchased the right grease and a grease gun and greased the slip joints and uni joints and the problems went away.

If you look at the service manual, the dealer is supposed to do that every 5000km service (in the older td models anyway).

Annoys me when I pay good money to the dealer every few months but they don't seem to get it after my constant reminding, just do the log book service for me this time, please
Here for a good time, not a long time!

I have the same problem in my 02/07 VX. The 'clunk' whilst stopped at a set of lights is very occassional, but when I release my foot from the brake pedal, it is very much noticeable/louder/more frequent. You can feel it vibrate through the car and passengers have commented on it. I have a 10 000KM service coming up and have the technical bulletin in hand (the March 07 bulletin for 'propeller shaft slip joint clunk'). Can anyone please advise if I am dealing with two separate problems? i.e. the clunk after stopping/dead still, and the brake pedal release clunk.

Had the drive shaft slip-joint greased up at the start of July. 16,000 Km later and there hasn't been a hint of the problem reappearing.

Hodgy, i know my dealer quite well, he has changed my driveshaft and greased it a few times but it keeps coming back. He told that not all of the cars do it, but the ones that do, it keeps coming back after a while, he also told me that Toyota are at a bit of a lose as to what to do next. He greased mine at 10000klm service and at 11500 it is back. i have just got used to it.

I have the problem back again after having my driveshaft replaced about a 6 weeks ago. I can feel the knock but is not as bad as before. Not sure if I will contact the dealer before my next service.

In the 12 months that i have had my car it has happened about 4-5 times that i am aware of, so it is not an issue for me yet.

If it were to do it each time i pull up i would be looking for answers from Mr Toyota.

10 000km service has come and gone, and after presenting the technical bulletin to the Service manager, I was told that it does not apply to my vehicle (03/07 build). What they did do and document was, "Tried another tail shaft (from a new Prado on the lot), all OK. Have spoken with Toyota, awaiting owner confirmation of noise still evident and then we will remove shaft and file machine marks". Well, you guessed it, drove out from the service centre and the clunk is loud and clear. What confuses me is the lip service from the service manager saying they actually took some grease out!! Confused. I am. If they tried another tail shaft and it was OK, why not just replace it?

Sounds like a game of Ducks and Drakes - try anything possible to actually avoid having to fix anything on your car. What a pain in the arse !

You could suggest using the drive shaft to turn the Service Manager into a popsicle

                        Good luck.

                        Cheers

                            Hi everyone!

This is my first post and little I can say about myself: my VX auto D4D is three years old and I have made some modifications on my own, learning a lot from your experiences.

I've read this post from page 1 several times because I'm suspicious about a clonk that I hear form time to time when I get stopped. Probably it's the same thing as you explained here.

I'm pretty sure that I've read the TSB that explained the problem and the solution, but I can't find it in the entirely post. I'm about to take the car to the dealer for the 60k service, and I'm sure that if I don't bring the TSB they'll come with the usual " we've tested and no problem. Never heard of your problem in other vehicles".

Could anybody tell me where I could get the TSB? I tried to take a look at tech-doc.toyota-europe.com but I could find anything.

                            Regards,
                            Jordi

I missed that post. My apologies... :?

I'll proceed as you suggest. I hope my dealer will have that info, although my previous experiences have been a little disappointing...

Interesting post. My March 07 Prado has a clunk after I stop. Scenario - stop at red light - couple seconds later - noticible clunk under car. Might be time to visit Toyota.
