Hi everyone,
Had the prado for a couple of months now. Nov 2004 build. 6 Speed Manual V6.
Every gear seems quite normal and smooth / quiet etc... until you get into 6th. Drop it in at 90km/h and your going to hear something like a rear diff noise but not too noisy (yet). At 110km/h it is quieter again and any sort of volume on the radio will result in you having to listen really hard to hear it. But its there, I dont' know what it is and im on a mission to try to find out. If you ask someone like me who only understands the basic gearbox / transfer case / diff concepts then I might say that I thought the noise could be some sort of bearing (worn ?) that is used only in 6th (I have no idea if there is one)... or It could also be a sound you might expect if you were really starting to wear that gear out - i.e. like a more straight cut gear that is noisier etc.
Has anyone had or heard of a similar thing ? Soon after purchasing the prado I did a full fluid's change and the new oil "may" have quietened it down but not sure as it isn't that loud a noise ( yet). Still, going from 5th to 6th, especially at around 90 - 100km/h and attentive person might hear it without you alerting them to it. ( if that makes sense).
I am aware of the threads and the "Auto" people having a similar noise in the 5th gear auto... but I would imagine this sound I hear is much more gear / tooth like then what they are hearing.
Any idea's greatly appreciated,
Cheers.
