  • Transfer case cracked after service.

    Hello.

I'm sure this has happened before to someone but I am looking for a bit of advice.

The prado went in for a service with no problems. I got it back and all was good until I returned home to find oil on the driveway.
So took the car back and they checked it out and it seems it was spillage when filling the oil.
So after they cleaned it up I get a call there is now a leak on the transfer case at the plug on the back and it's leaking oil from there.
Apparently some dirt may have been sealing they crack and when they degreased the car due to the oil spill it may have removed some dirt and exposed the crack.
My thoughts are they over tightened the fill nut and cracked the housing but maybe it happened from a knock whilst off road.
Any thoughts or ideas as it looks like they don't want to admit blame and won't fix it.
This was a main Toyota dealer.

    Thanks.

Are there any marks on the transfer case from a hit on the tracks? If not I would be pointing that out, is it Pacific Toyota, i had to argue with them about honoring an extended warranty claim for something else.

Guess it depends on the cost of the repair, but this smells of BS and I would fight it on principle.

If no visual indication of abuse, I would put it back on them as the most likely scenario is they overtightened. Ask to speak to the dealer principle, if you get nowhere goto Toyota Australia and consumer protection.

Took me a while, but I got my engine rebuilt after a dealership ran it without oil.

Well I'm shocked. Thanks for the response everyone. I would love to post some pics but had a phone call from the dealer this arvo and the car is in now having a new one fitted. I have been told it could have been them or not. But as they are now going to sort it out I am feeling much better.
I had a good look at the case and it still looks like new not even scratched so I am pretty sure it was them who over tightened the nut.
It would be interesting to know the torque setting if any one knows it.

          Cheers

I had a transfer case issue early on, not really the same as your situation and we never really agreed on what the cause was, however I personally believe it was a casting fault from manufacture.

Here is the full story if your interested http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...spat-it-at-11k

Good to hear yours is getting sorted.

            Cheers Andrew

Exact same thing for me, had service done, went on holidays only to find oil sprayed under car after reaching our destination. Crawled under and found cracked transfer case, over tightened filler plug. Used some JB Weld on it and tightened to less torque and hasn't leaked since (30,000k's so far)

Very easy to crack if over tightened by boofhead mechanics

How's this for a cracked transfer case.

Be very care full bolting big strong aftermarket guards to alloy which can easily crack.
These guards can cause quite a bit of leverage, resulting in expensive breakages......

So obviously this has been caused by a heavy hit on the bash plate attached to the transfer, I guess its a bit of a "chicken and egg" scenario as if he didn't have the plate fitted the transfer would probably have a hole in it from the rock anyway. So the moral of the story is "don't bounce off rocks!"

Just curious, is that a Prado transfer or something else?

It's a Prado transfer case off a 150 series. Not mine but I know the owner.

No-one intends to bounce off rocks but it happens unfortunately.

As rwo stated. That's a fairly heavy impact. I would most likely see more damage to the transfer case had the OEM plate been in situ.

Do you think it would have folded sooner therefore transferring less force to the mounting point?

Folded, perhaps. But that's a bloody heavy impact to bend the guard where it was. Have a look at where the mounting points are on the TG150 and the additional protection that it provides in the pics below.... I cant see how any additional leverage is created by this device. I know what I would rather have bolted to my Prado in an impact like that.

                          TG150 from drivers side:

And a shot from underneath showing access to drain plug is still possible unlike other guards now available.

I was just asking the question Craig, I'm not denying it must have been a heavy impact (I wasn't there). I have the TG150 fitted so I know how it differs from the factory guard.

Yes I have a TG150 on my Grande also. I've copped a few impacts on my guard also (obviously not as heay as this person's) and I'm thankful for the additional protection that it offers. I've also had my Tranny pan bashed in from an impact that I wasnt even aware of until I saw the fluid on my driveway at home. Had I had additional underbody protection to protect that area I would have avoided such damage.I think it's a case in being very unlucky for the owner of the vehicle. Hopefully the case can be welded up saving a very hefty replacement bill...
