Hi all,
Is it normal to have a whine in low range? I just purchased a 2008 prado 120 series and last weekend had it in low range for the first time. I noticed that it had a whine, my old subaru Forester did this also. I recently had the Auto transmission serviced and I mentioned it to them prior to service. They checked and replaced the oil in transfer case and told me that the oil was clean with no filings to be found. They told me that I would need to have the bearings replaced in the transfer case as they would be causing the whine. My question is if the bearings are worn shouldn't I hear the whine in both high and low range as I assume you use the same bearings in high range. When I asked my regular local mechanic he thought the same thing and said they might be trying to drum up extra business, they quoted me $2000 to replace the bearings in the transfer case. As this is my first "real" 4wd I don't know if it's normal to have a slight whine in low range. Obviously I would rather put that 2k to something else.
Appreciate any help on this,
Ben
