  • Transmission Fluid Change

    Hi,

I'm due to change my AT fluid at my next service. Previously I've flushed the gearbox using 8L of Toyota WS without removing the sump. How important is it to remove the sump and clean the filter and magnets?

I'm a bit hesitant to remove the sump for fear of warping it. Is the sump sealed with form in place gasket compound or a gasket?

Did those of you that have done it get much metal on the magnets or crud on the filter screen?

    Thanks

Mate I just did the flush (D.I.Y with AMTS) and didnt remove the sump but I called an auto trans expert first and they suggested the filter was re-usable/serviceable and it was very rare for them to change the filer on an A750F trans. I got the feeling their experience suggested the filter was usually in very good nick...

Forgot to ask about particles/debris though, so can't help you there.
    Cheers
    Micheal.

Gday bud, depending on how many kms your gxl has, i always change the filter when i do a tranny flush. Never had a problem with the sump warping and yeah they do use a gasket you can get 1 from repco or the like. Id stay away from the DIY cork gaskets as they can be a pain in the long run. If youve never changed the filter and its your 2-3th fluid change then change the filter.. like an engine oil filter it will pickup the metal shavings from the internals and such so its best to change it.. doesnt cost an arm n a leg and its good piece of mind.good luck!

Thanks. I'm upto 180 000km. The fluid has been changed 3 times in that distance. I'll try to get just the gasket on it's own. If not, I'll have to get a kit with a rubber gasket. They're around $50. I rang a local transmission rebuild shop and they advised to just wash out the filter with brake cleaner and change the o-ring on the neck.

Ive done the old washing it out with brake cleaner, but because the filter had been in the car for so long (220,000km) the filter went all flimsy and mushy after a week of use.. it clogged the pickup in the tranny.. for 50bux why would you replace it?! Cover your own ass.. extra half hour of work..

If you go down the path of dropping the pan and replacing the filter can you post some photos - many thanks.

Better to use the compound to reseal in my opinion. Don't sweat or seep from the sealant compared to cork I've used previously on other vehicles. The bloke I use wont use the cork gaskets only the sealant on vehicles that have it from the factory.....Cheers Steve

I'm leaning towards sealant if the gasket that cones with the filter kit is cork. The factory seal is a rubber gasket.

Mines never been removed and has sealant ?? Can see it, just. Will try and get a pic tomorrow will also ring Toyota parts to see if they have a part number for a rubber gasket. Maybe Toyota changed it some where along the line.... Cheers Steve.

When I looked at the corners of the sump pan there's a square edge of what I think is a gasket sticking out. I thought it was a gasket because excess sealant would come out rounded.

Rang Toyota yesterday. They come out with both rubber gasket and compound gasket. He wasn't 100% until I give him my chassis number but his computer was saying up till late 04 they used the compound stuff. Then from late 04 to 09 they used a rubber gasket. I'm wondering if its the same time the 5speed auto come out is when they changed it ?? Mine is 05 but what I thought looked like compound goo ?? Will have another look when it cools down a bit. Will try and get a picture of it. If it's a rubber seal then I'm going to order one, (none in stock in Aus) as I want to get mine changed and I prefer to use genuine parts. Was $45 for the part..... Cheers Steve

I usually stick to the term "if its from factory its there for a reason".. if its sealantbuse sealant if its cork use sealant hahah or a rubber gasket.

Sorry to dig this up its a bit old. But im thinking of doing a flush myself on my new (2ndhand) 07' 120 series. What is the procedure to do a flush? Is it just the disconnecting of the return hose, fill a few litres, refill, etc?
how do you check the levels using this method? I dont want to overfill....
I looked in the workshop manual but couldnt find specifics on the procedure.
