  • D4D 5sp Auto reluctant shifting into 5th

    G'Day Guys,

As most of you would know I am now onto my second D4D in 12 months........

Previous car was great, changed smoothly and changed down regulary to assist with slowing down/braking.

My new car does NOT like to shift from 4th to 5th or overdrive. It will hang in the previous gear until I manually shift from "D" to 4 and back again......

It does it on completely flat roads, when the engine/gearbox is operating temp or cold.

Was told that it would do that until it was up to operating temperature and was normal? Thing is my previous D4d was pefect.

Just ticked over 8000km and due for the 10k service soon. Would it be because of being new and tight?

    Regards,

    Rob

Sounds to me like there is a problem there.
Most people complain about the auto shifting into 5th gear too early.
As for needig to warm it up before it shifts properly - what a load of BS.

Mine's an 08 build and I never have problems as you describe...hot or cold. Sounds like they're having a lend of you!

Same here. I have the Mar 08 Auto D4D and no issues what so ever. As Leachy9 says they tend to change too quickly into 5th.

I would be contacting the dealer and telling them they are to fix the thing at the 10k service. They are pulling your chain, so don't take that crap from little piddley toyota service people. If they say it should be that way, ask to talk with the service manager, senior mechanic or the dealer principle. They should sort it out.

Let us know how you go.
Oh, and if they change the oil in the gearbox at the 10k service and they say it will fix the prob, get them to pay for it under warrantly.

Had a similar problem in my Subaru Outback but it was mainly when on cruise control.

I had them reset the ECU a few times and it appeared to correct itself.

            Darkhorse,

Did you end up finding solution to this problem?

I put my prado in for it's 6 month service with 7500km on the clock and it started doing the same thing a week or so after the service.

I complained about a engine thumping/knocking noise and the technician plugged something in to check fault codes but no other work was done.

Mine will shift into 5th but holds back for longer than it used to. I get a similar lag from 3rd to 4th.

Just wondering if anyone may have a fix for this issue? My 07 D4D is reluctant to change to 5th like the others have suggested. I typically have to change it to 4th manually and then back to D which helps it change or the other way is putting cruise control on while it is holding 4th gear and then it instantly changes to 5th.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Toyota couldn't help. They changed the trans fluid and filter to no avail.

Once they have a few Klm's on them they do this a bit.
At this stage don't stress, not a big problem, an oil change might help or not.
Must use the correct oil & set level correctly.

Main reason I want to get it sorted is the fuel consumption is quite high with the increased revs for longer. I only had the oil changed a few thousand kilometres ago and at the service yesterday they said it was brown again. I'm guessing Toyota didn't flush it. Any idea why it actually holds the gear?
