  • Transmission swap

    Hi guys.

Brand spanking new on the board. I've never owned a Toyota before, but I was offered a 2008 Prado diesel (I think it's a 3.0 non turbo model) w/standard transmission for next to nothing, so I bought it.

I love it. It feels like new. Runs, drives, and shifts like new.

My question: I know it's very common for manufacturers to install a wiring harness with connectors that may or may not be used.

On my standard transmission Prado, would it be a simple process to swap out the standard for an automatic? Say from a Hilux or another Prado?

Does the automatic even have electrical/sensor connections, or is it pull one and install the other? I know I'd have to change the console inside, but that doesn't look to be very difficult either.

Thanks in advance to all who answer. I'm looking forward to participating on the board.

If it's possible you would also need the Ecu for the auto. Whether it's part of the main vehicle ecu or a separate transmission ecu I'm not sure. But I imagine the whole process would be quite costly.

All Prado diesels are turbo. There are 2 engine variants, 1kz and 1kd. Both are 3.0litre turbo diesel. One is common rail injection the other is not. I suggest you familiarise yourself with exactly what you have (and the differences between variants, different transmissions for example) before you go shopping for parts, or it could become a very costly exercise.

Looks like he is from overseas. Not Australia but the dominion republic. So I'm guessing they have various models both there and other countries that Australia doesn't have including non turbo diesels and 4 cylinder petrols

Main harness wont have the auto wiring within it... its about an extra 15 wires though and can be done
Sounds like you got the "5L" engine
Theres other ways around it to go auto as in get a non electronic auto

That's correct, I'm in the Dominican Republic. The non turbo is the holy grail for a lot of folks here. They supposedly last forever, and are very basic solid trucks.

If you guys want to see a pic or two under the hood, I'd be glad to post them for you.
