  • Transmission leak from the two piece dip stick pipe.

I have a leak where the two pipes join. I have changed the o-ring but its still there.

I have been changing the fluid every 50,000 and its due for another change in 5000. It has 195000 on the clock.

I have checked to see if its over filled and its just under the full mark.

Filter in the transmission haven't been changed cause i was told they don't need too but now I am questioning the advice.

Has anyone any clues on whats going on.

The leak is not bad but it does leave a few drops .

    Zapper,

Not sure where the leak could be coming from. Best give it a good clean, take it on a good run to get it hot then have a good look. Should be able to track the leak back if everything is relatively clean.

Must say I've never looked for the location of the dip stick. Cars got just over 100,000ks so should take a look at the oils condition and consider changing it.

I cleaned it and located the leak where the two pieces on the drip stick tube join.

If the join is above the normal fill level, check that the transmission breather is not
        blocked.

Breahter is located on the top of the transmission if you look down behind
the engine from memory you can see them, one for the transfer case, one for the transmission.

The only breather I can see is located in the engine bay, next to the oil filter and that one is ok.

To see the one for the tranny do I have to look from the engine bay down?

That is the breather for the front diff, the other two are on top of the gear box assuming
they have not been moved to the firewall etc!

Ended up taking it in for a transmission check and service.

The fault was a crack just above the join probably due to moving the dip stick tube 3 inches to clear the extractors I installed over 8 years ago causing undue stress.

On the plus side transmission is ok.
