I grease mine every couple of services. A few pumps into each until you can see the new grease come through on all points of the joint. The main thing is that its getting some attention if you do allot of off road work.

I have never greased my nipples. Although the Toyota guy did look at my shaft and fix it after it was noisy. His words" we pumped it full so you should not have any more clunking from that shaft"

So in summary, I let a guy play with my shaft so I didn't have to grease my nipples, or give a grease gun one long pump as suggested in the posts above.

For the grease, well I don't think you can go past the Penrite EP3% for this application.

        John,
Replaced my old leaking grease gun with a K29 from QDS and using the Pentrite EP3%.
Works a treat and easy to use under the prado
        Thanks for the advice

Good on you MLC - I think this thread should always stay up top. Indeed, I am surprised it isn't a sticky thread already.

Valplex EP for the uni's and Valplex M for the splines. If you don't want to get two grease guns then I'd suggest Valplex EP. It will work on the splines but might need re-applying more often.

Can someone please recommend which grease to buy? Would be preferable if I can use the same grease to do the unis and slide joints.

I think these fit the bill but unsure:
            -Castrol LMX
            -Valvoline Valplex EP
            -Nulon Extreme Performance L80

It will be sticky if MLC has anything to do with it...

Not convinced that the Toyota dealership have bothered to do this properly, I got myself a Pressol 500cc grease gun (http://www.pressol.com/portal/page/p...dspMode=Detail) and this weekend crawled under the Prado and greased the propshafts and universal joints. Was lucky with the Prado as it was parked in the garage with all grease nipples pointing in a suitable direction with only one or two minor movements neccessary.

Quite a job to clean the grease nipples properly - maybe my fingers are too fat! And needed a lot of rags and paper to clean all the grease and muck off. (Surgical gloves and protective eyewear would be useful...) But did not have any problems with latching or unlatching and the grease gun worked very well. I used Castrol LM (Lithium-based NLGI-2) for all 6 grease nipples (yes - Castrol LMX is better at almost twice the price, but I cannot obtain it in these parts...)

For the universal joints, it was just as expected, with the popping noise after about 3 squirts and the old pitch black grease oozing out as it was replaced with the new grease (tan colour)... The propshaft slides were not so straightforward and so I gave these a couple of extra squirts and still with no grease evident. (How many squirts is correct for the propshaft slides?)

What a job! Maybe I should get some ramps...

I thought it might be quicker to get the wretched universal nipples of the rear propellor shaft in the correct location if I jacked up one of the back wheels, placed the transmission in neutral with the handbrake released so that I could rotate the wheel. I found the road wheel could not be rotated at all. I then placed the transfer case gear shift in neutral but still couldn't rotate the road wheel. (When one of the front wheels was jacked up, it could be rotated without difficulty.)

Can someone please explain why the rear wheel cannot be rotated? Is it related to the Prado having a LSD?

                      Thanks
                      Glenn

Prado is a permanent 4wd you need to jack up front and rear to turn the wheels.

Yeah or do what I do, just get under and do as many as you can then get in the car drive about 20-30cm backwards or forwards and get in and get the others. My prados got a 2" lift but I can get my creeper under and hit them all without jacking it up. Only just though!

Went into Toolmart in Belmont Perth to get a Kincrome grease gun and they didn't have one so had to settle for a cheaper one. Whoever stated the prado has naughty nipples is so true :P

Just an FYI, Castrol no longer make LMX grease it's been rebranded into their protector series as "Premium Heavy Duty Grease" (http://productsforyou.castrol.com.au...-Heavy-Duty/40). Blue stuff and gets everywhere as always :P

I did also buy a kincrome extended hose for the gun which helped a lot but it didn't have a twist part for removing off the nipple. I think once you have it on you just need to move it to a sharp angle to disconnect it... that's what I found anyway

If your unlifted then ramps are definately the go to do this job at home.and yes don't trust toyota to grease them. It's peace of mind to do it yourself.
