I was told it was because the car has been driven off road, they are not designed for it. i responded with its a four wheel drive.

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

I had a serious gearbox problem the other day as I pulled back onto the highway from the supermarket. It wouldn't shift out of second and nothing was working, she was stuck. A glance in the rearview mirror showed a fair build up of traffic behind me and I was cursing Mr Toyota and every manufacturer on the planet for making crappy cars and selling them at such a price. Of course for the last 12 months I've loved my Prado but this was serious. Finally found a spot to pull off and noticed an odd bit of blue material on the bottom of the gear stick. A bit of Super Sleuthing and Muggins discovered the blue material was the handle of a blue cooler shopping back loaded with 10kg of meat destined for the freezer. So please, anyone else thinking that silver thing with the black knob might be a prado accessory for stopping the shopping bags falling over, I'd advise against it. What makes it worse is pulling back into the line of traffic you have just created and hoping to hell nobody saw what happened but imagining they all did.

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

It is interesting to see that other people are having trouble selecting 3rd gear. I have a 2005 model it has 60,000km on it now and selecting 3rd is getting worse. I have changed the oil and found metal on the drain plug and also noticed it is starting to leak oil between the gearbox and transfer box. Also I have had trouble with the box from new. It failed at 2500km and took 3 months to get a new one fitted. I am looking to pull the box out and fix the leak and strip and inspect 3rd gear synchro as when anyone else drives the car you can guarantee they will grind 3rd gear – wish I had an auto!

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

I am the proud owner of an 05 GXL 6 speed with 160klm on the clock. I am also having difficulty going from 2nd gear to 3rd. The syncro's are making a slight crunching noise during shifting. I have just changed the oil (nulon 75W-90 GL-5) but it still seems to have the problem. I am interested to know if the majority of 6 speed owners are also having this problem? Has anyone tried nulon G70 gearbox treatment in theirs? Does anyone have a fix for this problem?

            Regards Andy :?

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

Gearbox is definitely the weak point of the 120 series 6-speed Prado.
Our old 90 series 5-speed manual box was far, far better than the current 120 series 6-speed one: it basically just worked.
Main issue with ours is Synchro, which is quite easy to beat (esp 2nd to 3rd).
Another instance is when going along in 1st in a carpark, while still moving, put in the clutch, into neutral, then re-select first: Grind! &^%$

Try some high quality synthetic. That solved exactly that problem for me in an old Rx7. Synthetic doesn't get as thick when it is cold and allows the synchros to spin more freely.

I have 80k on the clock and just starting to get problems with the synchro in 3rd gear when cold. Goes away when warm. Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Was also told by Toyota that my injectors need replacing. Waiting on word from Toyota for assistance with cost. Crossing my fingers on this one.

Well I am afraid that i have to throw my 2 cents worth in on this one. Whilst not a 120 Series, we have a 6 sp manual 150 series TD and not real happy to say that it has been in our local toyota service centre for over a month now. The car is only just over a year old with only 17000ks. Same problem however after normal service took car home that night and found (or couldn't find) reverse gear. Try as i might and even got the wife to check however cust could not go backwards. Long story short, took back to service centre, gear box ripped out, parts on order and can't wait to see how long that piece of string really is. Can tell you that car looks very different with no gear box underneath and whole centre console and most of the dash taken out. Not a pretty sight.

 I seem to have a different issue with the six speed box than most of you, I find that 5th gear doesn't like to be rushed
... I thought it was a characteristic of the box till reading this.. only happens in "F1" mode... and definnately better shiftin' when in low range.. no issues with 2nd or 3rd / reverse!!. cant wait to put a better clutch plate in it , as I like a bit of pressure under the pedal. but really happy with the 6spd, its got 117k on seems pretty tuff, and very clean teeth on 5th gear. . if i pause for that half secound before going into 5th it doesn't resist.. wouldn't swap it for a auto if you paid me, as I like to "drive" my cars .. cheers butane

My 120 has 100k on the clock and has the same probem with third when warming up! Have changed the oil yesterday to the Castrol specific Multitrax and it still has the same problem. Guess its just something I have to live with and nurse it until it heats up. on the other hand my work Hilux 5 speed has never had a hint of this problem and it gets bashed around every day. Still preffer the 6 speed due to economy though.

Hi guys, just a through I was out a couple of weeks ago looking for some gearbox oil for my 90. Asked the guy behind the desk at the local car part shop. He looked through his books and stated castrol mutlitrax is the oil for you. After picking up bottle and reading the fine print found it's 80w-90 not the 75w-90 as stated in the book. Iam sure the 6sp requires the same oil. Don't trust the guy behind the desk. Read the fine print.

Just put that in the other day. Asked at two places and they said it was the go. Tried looking for other oil that was the 75w-90 and could not find any. Every other oil I looked at was the same viscosity

RE: Just looked at the owner manual. Tranny needs a GL-4 or -5. Castrol Multitrax is a -5.

My 120 has done 98000kms. I have changed the transmission fluid 3 times now and have only used Valvoline DURAGEAR 75W-90.

I don't have any of the problems described in this thread. I love the 6 speed box.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

                                Hmmmmmm,
Castrol book recommends the Multitrax. What oil is everybody else using? And are people having the same problem with cars being serviced by Toyota with the 'genuine' gear oil?
