    Re: Clutch failure

I dont know how mud gets in there.
But when I did my starter motor rebuild I found a heap of mud and water within the starter motor. After a short time of no to slow forward motion.
It has 2 breathers in the stater motor assembly. Possibly a point of entry into the bell housing???

Also, is there gaskets between motor/ bellhousing/ gearbox??? or just flat surfaces with a few cutouts in the mating surfaces??? as I know there is no gasket where the starter motor mounts up. I would be surprised if there were gaskets as its not a oil filled area.
And in general it is said not to change gears in water/ mud ,from my understanding, only to avoid getting crap between plates and flywheel as already said.
There is no reason it would suck in mud/ water just because you changed gears. Muddy water would just work its way in there as a matter of course. wouldn't matter what you did. Its a car. This stuff happens, and Toyota should cough up. It has a factory specified wading depth so they must accept the fact that it will happen. (wade in at least that depth of water)

Toyota is doing the wrong thing in my book. And it seems like Toyota are failing in a few areas. Just ask a woman in my office. Trying to trade up from a 90 to a 120, The amount of crap they had to put up with before they had enough and went to Nissan and bought a new Patrol was rediculous.
Started with the salesman at Mandurah Toyota, abused her cause they lobbed on the lot 15mins before knock off time on a saturday.... and it just got worse from there..

    Good luck Jacto.

      Re: Clutch failure

The saga so far is that Fair Trading are discussing the matter with Toyota Australia, who are now saying that the clutch failed because of fair wear and tear and no mention of mud. When it was suggested that no where in the warranty book does it mention the clutch, they were pointed to a section of the Toyota website. So apparently it is not worthwhile mentioning in the warranty booklet that every vehicle is delivered with in the glovebox

Toyota did not even seem phased that they refused to allow after market parts to be fitted, which would have been cheaper and had the vehicle back on the road in three days instead of two weeks :x

Fair trading have put a mechanical specialist on to it now and have requested a look at the parts, so we will see what this brings.

          Re: Clutch failure

IT just seems completely ridiculous. Toyota dealerships must have been told to tighten up on their warranty claims due to the current economic situation.... or something. It's pretty low to bury additional facts about clutch warranty on the Toyota website and then drag it out when a warranty claim comes in. If you, the customer, aren't made aware of the full terms of your vehicle warranty then I don't see how the extra "hidden" terms can be dragged out of the closet when it suits Toyota.

Hope you get a result Jacto.

            Re: Clutch failure

            Guys,

I took my Prado in on Thursday to get my throw out bearing replaced and it turns out my clutch is also shagged as per Jactos. :x

It wasn't slipping yet but the pressure plate was rooted and probably only had another 20-30k kms of life left... Not the best outcome after 30,000 kms on the clock.

Gimp and I went in yesterday and had a look and sure enough the bell housing was full of dust and dirt... not mud. I can't see how you could get mud inside the bell housing unless you were completely stuck up to the gearbox in mud. If there's dust in there and you go through water then I guess it will turn into mud.

I had the words design fault thrown at me but there's still no chance of a warranty claim for me either!

Anyway I'm getting an Exedy safari tuff clutch fitted hopefully on Monday if it arrives. By all reports they're a top clutch especially for off road where it'll cop the most abuse.

Just for your interest, here's some pricing I got on clutch kits for the prado

 Genuine Toyota - Standard duty: $1195
 Auto one - Standard duty: $1095 + $50 freight (road)
 Auto one - Heavy duty: $1695 + $200 freight (air)
 Autobarn - Safari tuff clutch (Heavy duty): $785 + $30 freight (air)
            Repco: No listing

            Cheers,

This is just the kit? (pressure plate, clutch plate and bearing)

If so, the whole lot of them should be in jail, that's daylight robbery.

Just out of interest, aftermarket kit for Porsche Boxster $US499

                Re: Clutch failure

Received my new tuff clutch yesterday but it was the wrong one! They sent the 5 spd version.

Anyway after going backward and forward with autobarn (who were going backwards and forwards with exedy and some mob in adelaide) apparently there's no availability of an aftermarket clutch for the 2007-present 6spd manual gearbox. Reason being that that they have a pull type setup on the pressure plate and only push type are available!

He did mention that there is a 6spd clutch listed for the Prado but they must have changed the clutch type from push to pull between when they first came out (2006) and my model (2007 build/2008 compliance)

So a new Toyota clutch in going in (disapointingly!) And contrary to my above post, I'm not sure what auto one was quoting, but may have also been for the 5spd box.

If you're confused, so am I...

                  Re: Clutch failure

Far out Crammy! You only got 30,000k out of your Toyota clutch? That's not up to scratch at all! Unbelievable they'd wear out that quickly! Design fault sounds about right to me. Hope there's an after market job available if that ever happens to me. Heck but it's worrying how there's crud getting in there at all. I really don't want to be pulling my bell housing off after every damn trip I do to clean out the clutch assembly.

For Gods sake!. Don't take your Prado offroad? Why the friggin bejeezuz do they have 4WD at all then? Why do they have a 180L tank? What in blue hell is Low range even for then? My Prado was sold to me as a 4WD. That's what I'm using it for. If it breaks while I'm using as Toyota said I could then they can stick the consequences. Bought as a 4WD. Sold as a 4WD. Marketed as a 4WD. Bloody used as a 4WD. And Toyota can warrant it as a 4WD.

Being my first 4wd, how many km's can you expect to get out of a clutch? (I realise it would depend on wear and tear). I've just hit the 100,000 in an 06 GXL and toyota tell me i have a couple of thousand km's left on it. The smell is noticeable when towing the camper trailer from a hill start.
