  • Drive Train Fluids. What do you use and why?

    G'day all,

Just bought a V6 Prado and am wondering what oils everyone uses in there diffs, transfer case and gearbox? (Engine oil also if you would like to add it)

I have used Castrol VMX80 for transfers and gearboxes in many other vehicles, and everything from Penrite LIMSLIP180 to Castrol 80W90 for diffs depending on vehicle and diff.

Also those with a Air Locker in the rear, what diff oil are you using for that??

    Thanks in advance

(Yep I did a search, but wasnt alot about what oils people were using)

I wouldn't use VMX80 in the transfer case. It's too light. I'm pretty sure the manual calls for a 75w-90 GL4 oil in the transfer case and a 90 lsd or 80w-90 weight oil in the front and rear diffs, and 80w-90 in the centre diff.

I dont know, the book should tell you what grade oil to use where. After attempting oil change on diffs, box, transfer. I came to the conclusion that the small cost toyota charge whilst the vehicle is in for a service is a small price to pay for my sanity. I will say though that after seeing the diff oils after a small period of time i would recommend regular diff oil changes. our vehicle has travelled 23000 kms and is on its third diff oil change and honestly it looks yuck. Mind you we do a bit of towing.
      Cheers
