Is the transfer case and centre differential in the same case or two separate cases?

I found two large drain/fill plugs on the back of the transmission. The lube guide from caltex makes mention of two different oils, one for the 4wd diff and another for the transfer case.

Does anyone have a diagram showing the drain & fill points that they can post?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Centre Diff???

My understanding is that there is a front diff, a back diff, transfer case and transmission. Unless I am wrong, there is no centre (third) diff.

two different casings.. different oils too..........
the two on the back ; transfer case upper is fill, lower drain as below

my 6 spd man. gearbox fill is on the passenger side of the gearbox, "bout half way along. as below
( a bushy's rule always undo the fill before undo the drain!!!!! )

i do my own (CASTROL) front to back" save yourself a fortune, cost me $160.00 to change, engine oil/filter, front diff, geabox, transfercase, rear diff, -oils

now i know every level in the rig, got new sump plug washers from toyota, just to keep it buy the book!!! hope this helped.. butane

Yes there is one. The constant 4wd system needs it for on road. Diff lock, locks the centre diff.

          two different casings
          Let's clear up the confusion;

The Prado is an all wheel drive (AWD) hence it has a center differential. The center differential is intergrated into the transfer case (making it an AWD transfer case)

1 case, 1 oil, 1 drain plug and 1 fill plug.

It takes 1.4 lts of Hypoid gear oil, API GL-5 SAE 75w-90.

So, from front to back you have:

          Front diff
          Engine
          Gearbox
          Transfer case
          Rear diff

Thanks Mick, I love simple explanations and you have saved me a lot of angst as when I last serviced the Prado I did all diffs and transfer case and after reading this, was concerned that I had missed something.
            Cheers, Andy

              Re: Centre Diff Oil Filler

Thanks for clearing that up Mick.

I worked out that "4wd Diff" quoted on oil manufacturer's sites is refering to the front diff oil and quantity.

                Re: Centre Diff Oil Filler

It seems that there are three different types of oil needed to service the front diff, transfer and read diff. Am I interpreting this correctly? If so, is there any product that can be used in both the rear LSD and standard front diff?

                Owner's Manual states-
Transfer: Hypoid Gear Oil API GL-5 75w-90
Rear Diff LSD: Hypoid Gear Oil API GL-5 SAE 90 LSD compatible
Front Diff: Hypoid Gear oil API GL-5 SAE 90

                  Re: Centre Diff Oil Filler

You an use LSD oil in a non-LSD diff. If you use the oil finder on manufacturers websites, they usually recommend an 80w90 for the front and non-LSD rear.

You could equally use an LSD90 gear oil front and back. I've got an open rear and toyota used 80w90 front and back.

                    Re: Centre Diff Oil Filler

I just did mine last weekend.

I use Valvoline oil for everything. Have used it for many years now without issue.

Super diesel for engine..... I buy this in 20l drums
Duragear 75w 90 for manual gearbox and transfer. I couldn't get this last week, so went with a full synthetic 75w 90 from another supplier.
Hypoid 80w 90 gear oil for front diff.
                    LS 90 for rear diff.
I use the tom thumb pump for the job, except for engine oil. I have a drum pump with a 2m hose for engine oil. Woth every cent of the $85.00 I paid for that a few years ago.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.
