    Knocking sound whilst turning

    Hi guys,

    I've asked this question before thinking it might be noisy bullbar, however I am now convinced it has something to do with the drivetrain.

    Whilst turning left or right (full lock) a slight, barely audible knocking sound can be heard. The quicker the wheels turn, the more frequent the knock. It's so slight that if you have your radio on, you will not hear it. It sounds slightly as if I locked the centre diff and proceeded to do some turns on a hard surface...similar but lot less audible.

    I'm thinking it's just the toyota drivetrain as the sound seems to be coming from the front (front diff? maybe transfer case which is underneath the driver). What's your opinions?

    Possibly CV joints on their way out??? Full lock will put the most strain on em...

      I thought about it but the cars only done 30k kms!!! also CVs normally sound noisier when the accelerator is pushed down and this doesnt happend (or maybe it does but the d4d wins the noise battle?)

        What size tyres and wheels are you running? I had the same problem and it was my MTZ's rubbing the upper control arms... only in reverse though. I've since changed my rims to +10 offset which solved the problem.

              Try greasing your steering stops.... When dry they are a very common source of noise at full lock.

                Maybe a thought but try the lopwer control arm bushes. I have a knock coming from the front, got it checked out and was told lower left control arm bush stuffed which gives movement (the knocking sound).

                Worth a look.
                2004 GX TD Manual. Mods include: Roll cage/cargo barrier, snorkel, ECB Bull bar, side steps & tow bar. Future mods: Lift kit, GXL rims, roof racks, draws etc etc.

                  cheers guys, dropped it off to Rob at Robson brothers for a 30k service and asked to have a look at it, will update you what it is. I reckon MickL might be on the money here...

                    That was the corrective action I did for this fault (knock sound at full lock); seems to be a common one esp after a few water crossings.

                      I had a similar problem with a Ford Fairlane. It was traced to sticking clutch plates in the limited slip diff. Cure? Change diff oil an d do slow speed circles in opposite directions to lubricate the plates. I now do regular circles in all vehicles I own with LCD'S
