Removing Trailer Bearing Dust Cap

Hi,

I've recently driven through water as part of a recent trip with my trailer and want to inspect my trailer bearing grease for water ingress. I've got 12" electric brakes with 2T bearings.

I've tried removing the bearing end cap with hammer but it won't budge. Is there a tool for removing these caps?

Some times these can be very stubborn. Try hammering a thin flat screwdriver or paint scrapper into the groove until it starts moving. Has to come off evenly. Or you give it some big wacks & buy another from supercheap, they are only a few bucks from memory.

i use a small metal chisel (coal chisel).
it must be a flatter tip more like a screw driver.
after you do over 100, the chisel forms the correct shape, and you just grind off the burr that developes from the hub.

done plenty of these. Grab it with some vice grips and pull it hard. Whilst pulling it tap it gently with a hammer and it should start to come away with each tap.

Previous posts are good too and will also work.

Thanks guys. I'll order a new set before I try anything so I have spares on hand if I distort the shape when removing.

Can you post a pic of the offending cap? Some of those hubs do screw out rather than inteference fit. More common on larger hubs such as plant trailers etc though. If they are just the push in type I just use large multi grips like Westy.

Can you post a pic of the offending cap?

It will need one of those black strips across its eyes until court finishes. 8)
