Looking at the D27M the terminals are at the front, do you have to extend the cables in a D4D to get it to fit?
      Yes!

Well actually I could! Had to go and fit this tyre I bought from a PITA from Vic that wants me to post pics about my battery install

But here you go, I didn't extend either of the main leads, just jiggled them a bit and ran the power lead apound the battery instead of over. Just the poser lead to the fuse box that I extended and made a new earth lead to the body.

          Cheers Andrew

          • Thanks, glad to hear the tyre turned up. I was sus the way they were eyeing it off at the depot.

Is that your winch connected to the threaded posts? I received this resposne from Optima US when I asked about that.

Winches should always be connected to our SAE posts and not the threaded post. The threaded posts are intended for starting your vehicle which, although high current, is a short duration electrical load. A winch is also high current but can be very long duration. Using a winch connected to the threaded post could damage the connections in the battery, it can melt the side terminals right out of the battery housing. Only use the SAE (automotive type) terminals for connecting your winch. This is not only true for Optima, but for ANY battery.

            • Yes it is my winch connected! might have to rehash that, certainly hasn't been an issue so far! Sort of defeats the purpose of getting the blue top if you still have to have the winch connected to the main terminal.

              Cheers Andrew

              • Ok after reading this I'm more confused I think lol.
Can someone tells please what to buy
I have a d27f optima ready to go into prado. Going to use this as my aux battery just need to get of my ass and put it in, For my starter battery do I just buy the same one again? Or one of the blue tops, no need for extra posts. Is this the only difference? Apart from yellow being - ca1025 and cca830 instead of 1000 and 800 in blue top?
I have a winch and probably only thing That's going to be connected after market to starter battery.
                Thanks heaps. Mullins

                • Ideally you should have the same batteries when charging and discharging. That way in theory they will have the same charge and discharge rates and you shouldn't run in the problem of one not being fully charged etc. One would say it's the same for the age of the battery but most of us don't have the money to replace both batteries at once nor have the same batteries .

Myself I am running D27F for both start and Aux. One is about 12 months older which I am using for the starter.

                  • Ok no worries. Thanks Winston
I'll just go get another now then, do you change them over every 12 months or something? Would this have any benefit?
I would think doing this they should be both in the same condition in say 4 years?
Also should I also run the winch off both batteries to lessen load on just the one? I do use it almost every time I go 4wding

                    • Hi all, just thought I'd throw another battery into the mix. Decided to run a deka intimidator in my prado, it's a petrol so I got a 760cca. 70 ah model but they do make a larger one that would be the equivalent for the d27f it's. Made in us by east penn battery co. 800cca(so 30 cca less)80ah(14ah more )and weighs 1kg less. it's euro fit so you just turn it round and the terminals are in exactly the right place. Wanted an optima but didn't want to extend battery cables so decided to give the deka a go.

The road less travelled is definitely the best road to be on

You could swap them over every 6 - 12 months (it won't hurt) but you just need to check the voltages in the morning but more importantly use a load tester to see how your battery is travelling. The voltage of your aux battery should be a little higher (no load) as your vehicle still draws power when off. You need to use two batteries when winching as your battery main battery will go flat very quick. The winch will draw more than 100amps under load. Your vehicles alternator only supplies about 80amps (minus what it needs for your vehicle i.e aircon fan, engine operation, head lights etc.

As far as life span every battery is different. Location will have an affect i.e if battery is next to the exhaust etc and how often it is discharged and charged.

There is a lot of info on this but at the end of the day do the following:

Ensure the battery you get is fit for purpose. Cannot go wrong with an Optima yellow top as it can do both provide high current and be used in deep cycle applications,
Ensure the battery is charged as per manufacture spec, and
Ensure the battery is secured correctly and isn't subjected to high temp (optimas are designed for the engine bay) and or high impact situations i.e air the tyres down on bumpy roads (the rest of your vehicle will thank you),

                        Hope this helps.
