    Hi,

If the Alternator warning light is out and there is little or no charge voltage it will most likely
be your Alternator is faulty. I can't remember off hand where the intial supply voltage for the
alternator is feed from, probably as Matty and Loz wrote IGN1 or 2, if either of these are faulty
you would have more problems than what you have so it is most likely the Alternator.

There is also a 100A fusable link from memory in the main fuse block between the Alternator and
the main buss, might be worth looking at.

I have read of other alternators failing after driving cars through water and mud etc. I don't
quite under stand why this would be happen except in the case of salty water as the regulator
package and diode packs would be water proof. Most likely cause of failure would be the the wiring plugs and sockets, or in the case of mud dirty slip rings and brushes. you could try spraying the sockets and connectors with a cleaning/water displacing spray. Insert them and remove them a few times to clean the contacts.

Your could also try the same for the Alternator its self it you think it has been wet but keep in
mind a lot of cleaning sprays are flammable so if you use a flammable spray (CRC etc) make sure it
has dried properly before you start the car.

    Cheers

thanks for the help, hopefully me hijackign this has resulted in helping instead of taking away...

I will be checking both fuses, the 100 amp link and then checking connections this arvo and get back to you guys.

other wise its out with the alternator and into an auto electrician for testing.

      cheers for help guys

Someone not too long ago on PP had an issue with the IGN 1 or 2 fuses ithink, which affected the alternator and a number of other systems.

But it was due to plugging in a trailer which had an earth fault on it. It seemed at the time that one of the supplies to the rear plug is fused through the same fuse as the alternator sensing circuit. There is info in that thread of which fuse to look at.

HELP - indicators, aircon, ARB compressor gone

when i replaced my main battery i had all sorts of lights etc coming on/off. read the book and it told me to go to toyota. happened to be away on holidays on a Saturday but near one so dropped in and the guy there was very helpful. he said it just needed recoding after battery replacement. not sure if that helps you out but he did mine + fixed there + then. cant remember what the toyota ritual was to recode it, and i cant remember if or what other issues including charging i had. he said it was common thing so maybe worth a drop in visit to a toyota dealer, even if it confirms the alternator or something else

was that with a 2000 diesel 1kz? just wondering as the d4d would have a different set up...

well i pulled the alternator out and pulled the regulator off. it was dirty and had residue from mud and water around it. I sprayed inside reg with wd40 and cleaned and sanded all contacts. will put back in tomorrow and check if that helps. my guess is that the regulator is buggered. in that case do i go a new alternator for around $300 or just regulator and brushes for $120? the brushes look ok and are making good contact. Also, where is the diode? and could it be faulty? not keen on bolting it all back up just to see that it still doesnt work but worth the chance that it does to save $120-$300...

Diodes are build in to the housing mate, need to pull the end covers off to get access to them if i remember correctly.
There were drawings on ToyoDIY.com previously, but i can't see them anymore?

Anyway, link for the page anyway - perhaps have to register these days?

cheers for the info, the alternator went back in and didnt work any better...

the alternator has 200000km on it now so thinking of just buying new... dont want to replace a few parts to a worn unit...

when the car runs, there is no battery light on - does this indicate anything about the function of the alternator?

other option is to just take to auto electrician and see what they find...

don't throw it out mate... if you end up replacing it - i'll pay the charge to have it sent to my front door!!!

EDIT: be good fun to pull one apart and reverse engineer the circuit, find out how it really works...

I wonder if the sensing circuit within the ECU picks up on AC wave forms, caused by a shorted diode, and subsequently shuts the alternator down?

A mate destroyed a battery he'd just replaced before he figured the problem was his alternator.
