I've had a look at some UHF install posts here, but I have a question. Is it ok to shorten the length of the coaxial cable or will this impact the tuning? GME provides a fair bit of cable and I heard the looping it up with cable ties can interfere with the performance anyone have experience with this?

You can shorten the coax, you should not loop the coax, you can however serpentine itHKB Electronics, manufacturer of the Alternator Voltage Booster, Silver 2008 D4D,Lifted,Underbody protection, Alternator Voltage Booster, Tiger Z winch, Lightforce DL, Air Horns, Tanami Drawers, Drop down fridge slide, Outback cargo barriers, Rotronics dual Battery system, Polaris GPS, HF/UHF/VHF, Radio speaker combiner, Long ranger water tank, Diff breathers, Inverter, Snorkel and others

Thanks guys. I looped it in a figure 8 type pattern because once it is cut there is no going back. I'm remember hearing somewhere that shortening the cable will impact the tuning, but I'm not sure how this could be as I would imagine the shorter the cable the less loss experienced.2004 GXL V6, 5 Sp Auto

Coax doesn't per say affect antenna performance as everybody has indicated before. However if you were to run a extra long cable of (typically RG58 c/u ) coax that may cause loss to the antenna - length I have been quoted is no more than 6 metres.
However I am aware of upto 10 metres for installs into Mitsubishi rosa buses in the past for mine spec applications with bar light fitted at the back end
critical thing to ensure when terminating coax is to ensure no shorting occurs between shield & conductor2008 GX turbo diesel auto 5sp Fitted: snorkel dual battery kit kaymar twin wheel carrier Evenutally fitted: Bullbar VHF & UHF radios, storage system Still to come: winning lotto number to pay the blessed thing off set of decent side steps/rock sliders

From my experience, the shorter the better. You can shorten the coax but when re-terminating it make sure there are no shorts. the antenna is where the tuning is, getting it from there to the uhf unit with as little loss as possible is what counts for better send/receive.Blue Storm 150 D4D GXL, Toyota Tow Bar, Cheepo floor mats, Tough Dog Springs & Shocks, Colour Coded TJM T13 steel bar, KingOne winch with rope, GME 3440 80 channel uhf.
