  • Head Unit problem?

    Hey all,

I have a question regarding the satnav/cd player in my 2006 grande. It wont accept any CD's. Everything works perfectly including the DVD drive that takes the map disc. But when I try to insert a CD in the top slot, (there are none loaded at the moment) the flashing red lights at the edges of the slot never turn green. The mechanism that must open to allow a disc to be inserted is closed. Pressing the load button makes a beep but does not seem to do anything. I can eject the map disc, but obviously not any CD's as none are inside.
I have tried disconnecting the battery terminals for about 10 minutes and reconnecting. The dash clock resets and the programmed radio channels reset so I guess it has been disconnected long enough to reset the system. But no difference to the CD component problem.
I have also tried holding the load button and eject button for a few seconds until I get a long beep. Also read to try holding the eject button while turning on the key. None of these have worked. I havent tried forcing the slot open but I dont expect anyone would advise to either.
Has anyone had a similar problem? I have read that for the cost of repair I am better off to get an aftermarket one fitted. Does anyone know of any other possible fixes for this, or should I just concede that it is cactus and replace it?

    Thanks in advance,

    GOGO

Pretty much sums it up mate. While it can certainly be repaired, the cost to do so would certainly make NWR(Not Worth Repair) Fair chance if it came across my desk, thats what I would do. Open it up, look inside... and close the lid again!

Do you have children, children just love to put things in the cd slot!

If possible try gently pushing the flap back if it has one and try to see if anything is
      jammed inside.

I would suggest you ring around a few car radio installers/repairs and see if they will
service the unit, providing its nothing major it shouldn't be that expensive to repair.

You could also try a TV/Video/hifi repairer etc.

I have repaired many units in the past myself and never worked out to be more then a couple
of hundred providing the laser unit is not faulty, in your case I would bet on something jamming
      the mech.

      Cheers

        Cheers RanJ,

I thought that might be the case. I have no issue with installing a new one as I have also heard the standard one is pretty ordinary compared to others. Was just holding onto the hope of getting it working so I wouldn't have to try teach the wife how to use a different one.:-D

        Thanks

          Hey Leigh,

It may be possible my young fella has decided to stick something in it. It wouldnt be the first appliance he has killed.
I think I will remove it and open it up, I havent got much to lose. I do know a local electronics guru I might get to look at it. If nothing obvious or cheap I will probably just get a new unit, possibly a more childproof one! but simple enough for the missus to drive. It would be nice to have bluetooth and ipod connectivity also. The only concern is that the reversing camera is compatible and works the same way, meaning the screen just changes when you engage reverse and dont need to push a button. Im sure there are plenty of posts here about that so I just need to do my research.

          Thanks

Most of the good after market units are plug and play, you may have to adapt the wiring a little though as you wrote for the camera and reverse function.

            Cheers

These units come up pretty often/cheap on eBay. The newer models will fit in older vehicles. Just make sure you get a green backlit model.

                Hi D4D,

I havent checked out ebay yet but I reckon there are probably heaps of cheap and nasty chinese options. Would like some good advice on a decent brand and if its worth paying extra for one. What do you mean by a green backlit one?
I am guessing the newer 120 genuine units should fit straight in with no messing about, and I think they may have bluetooth and ipod as well. That would be an ideal replacement if the price was right, though I'm not confident about that.

                Cheers

Bluetooth on the OEM unit is pretty average. I get a lot of requests to add aftermarket bluetooth because of them. Even after Toyota software upgrade.

Green backlit to match the rest of the dash lighting

Yes the newer 120 and even other model units fit straight in, same wiring loom. There is a thread on my upgrade somewhere.

Thanks for the link D4D, I think I may go the same way you have if I upgrade. This might be a silly question but is the screen tilted or can you adjust the angle? Only ask because my current one can and I find that without tilting the screen it is almost unreadable.(I am fairly tall I guess)
Out of curiosity, can anyone recommend a good non genuine replacement unit? There are loads on eBay but none of the brands sound familiar

Nope but it hasn't been a problem to date

I have a very similar problem where it only shows "WAIT" on the screen. no radio, no cds nothing is working at all when I turn it on.

I'm looking at the Parrot Asteroid SMART unit as a replacement. Thread here:
