  • Mobitronics Switching Supply

This is probably outside this forum's charter but I know a couple of Auto Sparkies lurk here so here goes.

Mate has a 200 series diesel Cruiser with a 220v outlet plug in the rear at 100w. He has a Waeco CF50 with an external switching supply MS-50A which powers the fridge.

The problem is when he plugs the Mobitronics in to the 220v outlet in the vehicle there is no audible click to show it is turned on and working, hence does not power the fridge. However, when he plugs the Mobitronics into a GPO in the shed it works. We plugged my CF50 with its built in inverter into the 220V outlet in the vehicle and it worked.

Any clues as to what is going on?

    Technical details of the MS-50A are;

    AC input 100 - 240v AC 50/60Hz 3A
    DC output 27VDC 6A 150W
DC Battery input 12/24 VDC 12A/6A
DC Battery output 12/24 VDC 12A/6A

    Many thanks in advance.

You mean an MPS-50A? Perhaps it isn't getting enough juice from the 220V outlet in the vehicle. Best to go DC all the way to avoid losses converting DC to AC back to DC.

      there is your problem.

200 series is outputting less than 0.5A at 220v

Are you literally saying the 200 series 220v plug only outputs 0.5 amps. Is there any reference for this please?

Reference is in the OP. If it is 100w, then it is 0.454A output. Here's a calculator to avoid the maths yourself: http://www.supercircuits.com/resourc...amps-converter

That plug is really only good for phone chargers etc

I would have thought 0.5 amp would be plenty to at least get the audible click when the mobitronics fires up without the fridge attached as it does on normal 240 volt household power.

Perhaps it's not a fan of less than 240 at 60Hz. Or it needs a sign wave to work and the cruiser isn't offering it. If you're really set on using that setup, it looks like you'll need a decent inverter to take the startup current and some juicy cables. IMO it's a very inefficient solution.

The problem might be the voltage, as the supply is an auto switching type ie 120/240
it needs to be sure what the supply voltage is before it starts operation else it damage
itself or blow up whatever is connected to it.

If the car inverter is only putting out 220V this may be enough to inhibit the 120V operation
but not enough for the unit to see it as a reliable 240V supply.

                Cheers

CF-50 requires 700mA @ 240V fair chance that it's not going to start on 500ma @ 220 as LeighW points out.
