  • Brake light issue

G'day. I have been through the forums, but can't seem to find a solution to my problem. The problem is simply that the brake lights don't work! I have checked/replaced the 'stop' fuse under the bonnet, but to no avail. Checked the globes, all work when wired direct to a battery. I checked the peddle switch, and it also is working...in fact, when I put a test light across the 'stop' fuse, can see the voltage change on the peddle push.

This has really got me stumped...it appears there is no power to the wiring at the back. Is there another fuse? An inline fuse perhaps?

I have only just noticed the lights, after I checked them after connecting the trailer, so not sure if that caused the problem, but I assumed even if it did, it would be the fuse!

    Any ideas?

Well, I decided to have another look, and although I'd tested the brake light switch, I swapped it over with an identical one out of a camry, and away it went!! The brake light switch has 4 connections, and I tested continuity on the two largest connectors and assumed it was working...well, you know assumptions!!

      Brake light switch replacement

Can anyone confirm when the brake switch is installed if the brake pedal should be in a pressed or depressed position - or does it not make a difference?

After suffering an auto box that would stick in park, a flashing cruise control light and over the weekend realising I have no brake lights I jumped on PP and shortly after determined the issue was the brake light switch. Threw a new one in and everything as back to normal, however just want to make sure it is in the right position.

The switch should be adjusted so that it takes a couple of mills or so travel
of the brake pedal before the lights come on, ie resting your foot on the pedal
        won't trigger the lights

Thanks Leigh. The switch simply clips into its housing, so there is no ability to adjust movement. I just wasn't sure if the position of the foot brake when the switch is clipped in determined the trigger point for the brake lights.

Was thinking old days, in the "old days" their were three adjustments, the switches could be adjusted,
there was an adjustment to set the height of the pedal above the floor and a servo gap adjustment.

Haven't been under the dash of the Prado for ages can't remember whats there now, probably no
            adjustments these days!

Some switches can probably still be adjusted as you say, thankfully in the 120 it seems to be only a gap type adjustment. With that being the case you helped me answer my question anyway - pedal pressed or depressed shouldn't make a difference.
