  • Intermittent Air Conditioning.

Having some problems with the A/C in my 120 series (V6). I recently had the A/C compressor replaced and now it's developed a new bad had of working intermittently. When I start off the A/C works OK however if I stop the engine for a short time and restart, the A/C light on the interior switch blinks and there is no cool air. I turn the switch off and keep driving for a couple of minutes and then hit the switch again the A/C will start working. Have also replaced the A/C clutch relay as I thought this might be the problem. If it's not electrical the only other thing I can think of is that something in the system that when it heats up it's stopping the unit from working and when it cools down again the A/C kicks in again.

Appreciate if anyone can hive me some advice on how to get round this problem.

Sounds like a refrigerant problem, or condenser fans, if the fan is working get the system gas charge checked.

To me it sounds like the gas pressure is rising to high when you turn off the aircon,
after driving for awhile the cool air flowing over the condenser drops the pressure and the system will fire up again.

      Yep.

      Maybe overgasd. Hot condenser?

Thanks for the info people, it gives me somewhere to start looking. I was worried it may have been the condenser and wasn't keen on pulling the dash out. Thanks again, will post the findings here if I get it going properly.

Under the engine bay is a relay called MAG CLT.

When the light on the dash fails this relay has failed. I bet the compressor clutch doesn't cut in when the light is flashing. Seen it before a heap of times.

Way to fix - Replace Relay.

          Problem will be solved!

Also for future referecnce Barney the condensor is in front of the radiator and the evaporator is behind the dash!

Have replaced the MAG CLT micro relay Walky, that was soon after replacing compressor. $95 quoted at local Toyota spares, $20 at auto electrical suppliers. I thought that would fix the problem, unfortunately it hasn't.

You're right about by stuff up in earlier post, realised I had my condensers and evaporator so mixed up as soon as I hit the post button.

While we are talking air - con, if you play in the mud, it will block your radiator & condenser cores, both cooling systems won't be working well.
It's worth giving them a really good wash out, lots of water & time consuming.
It's best to remove the engine fan & shroud to clean them.

hmmmmm that is strange..... Faulty relay???

The only fault i know of is this relay or the mag clutch on the compressor itself, but i believe you mentioned new compressor??
