Using another alternator is not an option for me . I always carry a generator so if I get stuck with a flat battery, out comes the coffepot then the gennie.
    Thanks for you input

    Hey Monty,

Unfortunately you'll never get a fully charged battery with the D4D alternator, My main battery regularly sits on 12.4 -12.5v which is roughly 75 - 80% charged. This is one of the reasons I went down the Ranox route and also because I changed my aux battery from a wetcell to an AGM battery. The Ranox will ensure a 100% (or near enough to) battery charge every time. Previously my aux battery would only last probably a day and a half after a full days driving. When I say day and a half I mean without discharging it to a point that would damage the battery.

As long as you're not running anything off your main battery when the engine is off I wouldn't worry at all, unless of course you are already having problems?

      Thanks Crammy,
Looks as if the Ranox is the way to go. Where did you mount the Ranox? I have a Codan under one front seat and as yeta drawer system is to be added. Is the $350 quoted the current price. I must admit there is a wealth of info out there when you start looking.

        Monty,

Will be better to discuss in this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4117 rather than hijack this one. I'll be happy to answer any questions you have. 2nd page shows mounting position and rest of install.

Re: Battery Charging, Have a read of this!!!

          Hello Glen.
I made a post some time back about wiring for your trailer brakes and auxillaries and to me it sounds like it could be a voltage drop problem from the long cable run and the number of joins in the cable. I always advocate the fitting of an earth wire from the trailer plug back to the negative battery post the same size as your positive. The other thing here is that we are talking about DC and as someone else said there may be semiconductor switches here and in some instances that I have seen they act like diodes, that is they only let current pass in one direction only. Come to think of it my camper is fitted with a whopping great diode that prevents the campers charger from feeding power back into the car electrics.
The only way to really solve your question is with a multimeter, a sausage sandwitch and a few stubbies.
          Cheers.
