      Nice work JGD

Have you thought about running a wire from say the number plate lights area rather than drill holes in the door? or along the chassis rails as someone here suggested. In my rig, got the wires running thru the chassis rails into an Anderson plug at the back. The Anderson plug is attached to the rear bumper, same bracket Toyota use to mount the trailer adaptor.

      Just a suggestion.

Re: Rear work/spot light install - MORE PICS ADDED

        Thanks for the compliments.

I got it painted and installed it this morning. Some installed pictures are below.

The edge of the light sits about 5cm back from the edge of the spare tyre and is about the same above it, so the tyre is still easy to remove and replace. The vertical pole is also spaced about 2cm from the tyre, so there is no rubbing there.

I haven't done the wiring yet due to rain, so you can still see the cables hanging from the bottom of the steel tubing. I plan on having it connected directly to a swicth at the front and don't plan to have it activating on reverse (at the moment).

Dustie, I'll have a look to see if it's worth while running the cable over to the licence plate mate, but I don't really have a problem drilling a small hole in the door panel anyway. I have other cables running from the front to the rear (12V sockets and fridge power) along the drivers side, so I'm thinking it would be easier for me if I kept all the cabling in one place.

All in all it cost about $100, including the steel ($20), light ($55), cabling and connectors (on hand), switch and relay ($20), paint (on hand) and beer (on hand).

Great work but you might want to do it like the other one. As soon as you come out of a ditch you will tear it off and you will be minus one reverse light. ops:

Looka great and it would be a great improvement to rear vision. Is the relay waterproof? I would imagine a drink of water will kill the relay if it is not.

                  Re: Rear work/spot light install

                  Hi guys,

I'm in the process of making up a rear work light as well. I brought the Kaymar spacer but I'm making up my own pole and light. I know how to wire up the light so it comes on with the reverse lights, and I also know how to wire it up as a single stand alone light switched on/off from the dash but my question is this- Is it possible to wire up both ways, ie, it comes on when in reverse, but can also be turned on/off from a switch on the dash, reguardless of whether in reverse? I'm thinking I'd have to run 2 relays. One off the reverse wiring, the other maybe off the parkers. That way if the vehicles not running, and not in reverse, I can turn the parkers on, trigger the relay then turn it on via a dash switch. Any ideas??? A wiring diagram would be great.

                  Thanks
                  Cheers

                    Brett,

What you want can be achieved by using one relay and a Double Pole Double Throw switch with a stable off position in the centre (DPCO). Below is a circuit showing how this can be done.

I'm glad someone dug this thread up as I came on here tonight to do a search to see if there was any info. Got a light sitting in the shed ready to be fitted and was looking for a way to mount it, now I have.

                      Thanks

Buggered if I know. I will let you know when it happens   . I can afford another if it dies :P :P :P :P
The relay could be mounted in the rear quarter panel where the jack sits. There is a grommet down there on the floor pan where you could push through that is used for the trailer harness wiring to the trailer connection (socket)
Have you got any pics Matt of the light output?

I had a thought that a DPDT switch might be in there somewhere. I just couldn't work out how to put it all together.

                            Brett,
I have been looking at your design for your rear lights. Why put the relay at the rear at all? A good place is in the well by the fusebox on the drivers side. All the power and reversing light wires are there and a single run can then go to the light in the rear. The only value for a feed wire to the rear and then a relay to activate as I see it, is if you want a power source at the rear and you can then use it for other purposes. There maybe value in that. The front relay lends itself to less wire runs overall. The presumption is that you would run a wire from the relay to the dash to enable you control the light via an illuminated switch, when sourcing from the parkers. I say illuminated because those Euro cars with a rear fog lap that are left on are very irritating. Yours will be blinding!

                            My 2cents worth.

                              Re: Rear work/spot light install

I'm in the process of wiring up 2 lights for the back of the roof rack. (fathers day present, had to blow the dust off them  )

So far I have ran the 2 core 4mm wire from the lights position at the back of the rack, along the underside of the rack to the front above the drivers door. ducked down under the black plastic strip running along the gutter, down beside the front window under the plastic (neat fit) but not under the rubber. ducked under the gaurd around he wipers (dont know its name) then in through one existing gromet into the enhine bay, then in through the big rubber grommet into the cab just in around the in cab fuse box.
I have a relay to mount under there, and a illuminated switch for manual over-ride. It will usually be auto on with reverse.
But I am yet to go looking for the reverse wiring to tap into. There must be one somewhere.

I chose this route as I couldn't find a nice easy waterproof non drilling method of bringing power up the back of the car. Had the rear light group off and that didnt look easy, although it would be easy to steel a switch wire source for the relay that way.

If anyone can spill the beans on a reverse light wire up under the dash I am all ears...

Post pics after I do a bit more, hopefuly tomorrow.
