If you are put high wattage globes in the main lights, they could over heat the plastic lense & turn it a dark colour or in worst case they could melt your lenses or reflectors, thats why they say turn them off when you are parked because there is not any cooling from the wind blowing over the lights.

On some after market globe instructions say they arent recomended for acryilc lights & if used could cause damage which is not covered under warranty.

I have noticed on some of the IPF lights that there are green rings of stuff that looks like that old glow in the dark material? Anyone know what that is for?

Thats what it is, it' suposed to golw for 15 minutes after the lights have been turned off

Ok, to answer the questions:

1. The Fog lights just use the existing wiring, easier to swap than the headlights. As for discolouration to the lenses, will just have to wait and see. Got them on eBay from the US.

2. The same law "No fogs lights unless there is fog" applies in Victoria, $116 fine. However every second car I see at night seems to be driving with fog lights on in Melbourne. I personally don't bother as It doesn't make much difference to have them on in built up areas. This law does not seem to be enforced, otherwise fewer people would be doing it. In country areas they do help light up the road. I don't have a bull bar so no spots / driving lights for me.

3. As for the colour temp, I agree yellow is better for fog. I very rarely drive in fog so this is not a big issue for me.

I like the extra light they provide and will probably only use them on the odd trip out of suburbia.

I live in the suburbs, not much fog, but every man and his dog drives with the foggies on. It's against the law in nsw too, but when the coppers in the xr's are driving with theirs on, I don't really see them booking anyone else for it.
I really only want them for secondary lights for country trips, so shouldn't be a drama.

My brother inlaws brother was driving back to Canberra from Sydney when he was pulled up by the NSW HWP near Golburn for having his fog lights on in his XR6 company car in the day time. He gets out as the two young HWP boys walked around his car going blah blah blah and said "what are those blue and red lights on your parcel shelf"

. The brother goes "oh sorry my name is Inspector Smith from the Australian Federal Police ":shock: .
Needless to say the HWP boys crapped themselves and let him off. He had genuinely forgotten they were on and expected to cop the fine.

I actually prefer the whiter light for fog. A good fog light is not designed to penetrate through the fog but is meant to give a low wide spread of light. The lower the better - trying to actually get under the fog blanket not so possible with the height of the Prado. So a good whiter light and a good wide spread increases visabilty of the line markings on the road, especially now with the reflective paint they use for line marking.
It is true though that for peneration, they use yellow, eg street lighting in fog prone areas. Yellow doesn't reflect as much to the water droplets in the fog... but as for car lighting - i still prefer to see the line markings than trying to see 'through' the fog. Actually looking at the pic's above of the fogs on, they don't seem to have a very good 'wide' spread to them.. perhaps just the pic.
ps i have fitted HID light and when they are on, if i put the fog lights on with it, you would'nt even know the foggies were on.
I would have to say that the std Prado lighting is shocking.. my sons 1991 Camry is better - but it has seperate driving lights built into headlight not the dual hi/lo the Prado has.

Add me to the list of Fatboy installs for headlights. I had to remove both the batteries to get good access, but they are in. Will reposrt the result when I take a run tonight.

Fixed, tried again.

It is very good initially lighting nearby objects, garage, parked cars, and is better than the original globes. When I got down the road I found that the spread is better and the light is whiter. I am unconvinced that it is a better overall light. High beam is spread as well but it seems weaker than original, ie less penetration. For me light penetration is the issue.

I am ok to keep them installed but not as impressed as some.

Martin I would agree with your impression of the high beam performance. however it was the low beam performance that I was after and in that regard I find the IPFs better than the OEM globes. I never use my highbeams without my lightforce HID spotties so I was not concerned about the high beam performance of the IPFs.

Current ARB catalogue (april 2008) lists the Xtremesport 65 watt set at $399, 2 lamps, loom and switch
HID driving or spot lamp at $789 each, including ballast and long leaps(?)

Straight out of the book, don't know what long leaps are, doesn't affect me though, as $789 not fitted is not even close to the budget set down here by the cfo

They then quote $121 for the pair standard fitment ie arb bar more on anything else.

Got the 900XS HID's and can say they are fantastic - value for money? no not really but i didnt have to pay retail. For the physical light size the output is truly amazing. Getting some fatboy globes for the headlights to add some more light!
