  • Thanks for that ValleyGXL120.
Will have to have a look at the site. I am thinking of getting the ARB install as by the sound of it the passenger side firewall is a better place to have the aux battery.
The redarc seems to be a popular isolator so when i enquire i will ask for a price to install this as a comparison with the "Smart Solenoid".
    Cheers

    • Correct! Sure Power Smart solenoid it is.

Pradopoint member Craig sent me a good PDF document about them if you're interested. You might get the same info from the website though.

Sorry I didn't see your question earlier.... some people... I ask you.....

      • Thanks for that Iron-Paww.

Have you managed to run anything off the dual battery yet? Interested in how the N50EX holds up.

        Cheers

Your fridge will draw anything from 2Ah - 2.5Ah. I had a 70ah battery and the fridge ran thru the night. Has to go for a drive next day to keep it charged. Ended up buying a small solar panel to trickle charge.

          • Sadly no, I haven't had the chance to run anything off it for any decent amount of time. ARB say the N50EX will run an Engel for maybe 2 days depending on how hot it is and weather you turn the fridge down / off at night. It all depends on how hard the fridge has to work.

One thing I noticed straight away was the starter motor was noticeably more energetic when cranking. If I get this right, both batteries are used for power needs when fully charged. You switch off at night and the the fridge etc starts drawing power. Once the batteries lose a certain amount of charge, the cranking battery is isolated and only the second battery is used.

Definitely a solar panel to trickle extra charge into the system is the way to go. Particularly if you're stopped in one spot a few days. ARB suggested this to me but of course they would as they sell them. From dead flat I think ARB said you need a good 40 minutes to charge the battery again. However this is also dependent on conditions as apparently batteries like the N50EX need to be "warm" to begin taking on a full charge.

            • Hey I-P
Dug out my invoice from ARB Nundah Qld, installed in May.
Parts about 15% less than yours, and looks like they forgot to bill me for the battery.......should I tell them? Should I feel guilty?
Did however also have all the other ARB gear installed same time, so more ability to negotiate a better price.

I'm quite happy with the 2nd battery position - usually have she who must be obeyed in the passenger seat, and me in the drivers seat weighing at least a battery more than her!

I also accept the fact that I'll never get back what I've spent on the prado's accessories.
Always wondering what I want vs what I need vs what I can afford...

i like the position they have your battery in.
means area for a 3rd battery. that is excellent.
a good spot for a compressor also.
i also run a small solar panel (always wired up) to trickle charge.
there are 50 size batteries that run the equivilant grunt of 70's.

                  • Rhs58: Yeah that'd be right. I always seem to get flogged when I buy stuff. Maybe I need to wear my ripped camping outfits into the store so I look like a guy with no money! ARB did say they had just done a "pricing review" and prices were changing the week before I had it installed. There's my luck doing it's thing again........ I suppose too, being in the West, miles from the happening Eastern Sates, we get slugged a Nullabor shipment fee :? .

I'm with Ntpryce, dont feel guilty. 8)

Battery position: Yeah I guess it's not all bad. Each spot has it's pro's and cons I suppose. The ARB battery tray looks to be built like an outback brick #2's house so I don't think there will be any worry of it coming adrift. Workmanship on the install appears ok with decent quality fittings and wiring used. Good point too about putting the more "solid" people on the drivers side. And weight imbalance will would soon be cleared up  .

What solar panels do you guys use? Seems that generators are fast becoming a no-no when camping within coo-ee of others. So not sure what to do when camping for a few days other than solar panels.

                    • I confess to be a bit confused with the problems of the 2nd battery being over the driver side wheel arch. My set up was done by a local auto elec prior to my taking delivery of the vehicle. Initially the intended use was to run a winch on my boat trailer and therefore have an anderson plug on back bumper. Now I have been following the discussion re the concerns of where the battery goes. I had a mate who is a mechanic have a look the other day and there appears to be some sort of OEM bracket at front of arch and the tray sits firmly on this as well as arch plus a bracket on top to front rail. We couldn't see how this could really pull out even on rough travel. Maybe we are missing something or have Toyota changed on the newer vehicles?

                      • Hi Cjd,

I don't think Toyota has changed anything. I have a Piranha battery tray since early 2005 which is secured similar to what you had described. So far I have had no trouble over rough tracks. ARB seems to think otherwise, hence they locate the battery on the passenger side.

However make sure under the wheel arch the bolts are secured with a flat metal plate, otherwise you may find the bolts get ripped off the wheel arch.

                        Hope this helps
                        Cheers,

                        • Hi all

Make sure you all read the RanOx thread on this site. Even though there is nothing wrong with the ARB installation or the Smart Solenoid that they use, you will never get full auxiliary battery capacity from your D4D. This has been fully explained elsewhere on this site.
I have used both simple diode isolators (in the days when you could "jack up" the alternator output by 0.6 volt), the Smart Solenoid and the Redarc in some of my past 4WD's. For my D4D I consider that the RanOx (or equivalent) is essential.
Just my 2c worth and in no way affiliated with RanOx. Being an electronics engineer, auto electrician and manufacturer gives me a head start. Now retired!
