  • Went to ARB this morning as Ive had some beef with them regarding a sh1t-house paint job on my DeLuxe bar and a busted fog lamp. They have been arrogant tossers thoughout, but that's another story...

Anyway, so I asked the guy there to amuse me with a dual battery quote and he point blank refused and said they will NOT put an under-the-bonnet dual battery to a petrol 120-Series. Said they'd had no end of grief with the few Piranhas they had done in the past with wheel arches cracking etc.

In the meantime I've had an independent 4x4 outfit quote me $1,200,- for Piranha tray, isolator, volt meter, battery and extra rear power point.

Anyone care to comment on this?

I'm fairly handy myself, so might just attack it on my own.

    • $1200

They have got to be F#%#%$@ joking !

If you were over in Perth I'd say "buy your parts and fire up the barby ... "

We'd have a couple of PPers pop over in the morning ... and you'd have your dual battery system in place in time for lunch.

I can't believe they can quote prices like that and still sleep at night.

      • Well I wont say explicitly what I think of that price as it would probably be moderated, though I think it's easy enough to read between the lines

Here is a rough price breakdown. (All prices are approximate, but you should be able to source the parts for these prices. I'm sure with their buying power ARB would be sourcing them considerably cheaper).

        Battery tray: $150
        Redarc: $100
Cable, lugs, outlet etc : $150
Battery: $300 Exide wetcell (this or something similar is what ARB would
        be using).

        2-3 hrs work.

So I reckon you would be paying around $200/hr for some unqualified "fitter" to install the system. I may be wrong, but I really doubt ARB are using fully qualified auto electricians for these installs. Even if they are, the rate is still very high.

I'm more than happy to help any Prado Pointers who are not confident to install a system or don't have the necessary tools. Just organise to get along to the next Perth tech day. Besides saving some money, by installing it youself you will have a much better understanding of the system, which is always handy when off the beaten track.

        • I got quotes from ARB and TJM and ended up going to good auto electrian and had mine fitted, including new cable to the back and a second socket was just over $800.

            Thanks Chippy! :P

Well, I do come to Perth quite a bit as my missus (hence the in-laws and rellies) live over there. A great city by the way... And Margaret River isn't too shabby either...! However, the Prado stays in Melbourne. Did the Nullabor once, but it'll be a while before I do it again. Or so the wife tells me!

Yeah, sure is a lot of loot. It does include wiring up an extra power point in the back too, but I can get an ABR Sidewinder lot for $395,- plus battery and a few meters of cable to do the rear myself, so I reckon about $700,- for the lot. And that would include a slab of bevvies too.

So, no problems for anyone putting a dual battery under the hood - and moving the steering reservoir...? I don't want a cracked wheel arch... as this is something I have heard about from a few sources.

            • leachy_9 and Hutch - You both speak sense to me! Nice one guys!

As for ARB... After my recent experiences (documented elsewhere on this forum) they can go... Well, that would call for serious moderation too...

I reckon there needs to be a bit of common sense to an install like this.

Most of the battery trays available for the V6 120's have a mounting plate for relocating the PS reservoir. In some cases you may have to remove one of the PS hoses temporarilly while you re-route them around the air con piping. I would also look at a bit of split tubing if the hoses look like they may rub.

I'd go a sheet of rubber in the bottom of the tray ... to absorb some of the vibration and reduce the likelihood of vibration causing damage to the bolt holes.

I'm also a bit paranoid about those bolts that go through a single skin of panel work and have a pissy little washer on the other side. I got myself a piece of 50mm x 3mm flat bar (primed and painted of course), drilled the required holes ... and used it as a giant washer on the other side of the panel. I also sealed the the gap between it and the panel by running a bead of sikaflex in there before I did it up.

I know its probably overkill .... but I've had the battery tray out several times in the last year ... and there is no sign of movement and no wear.

Good luck with saving a bucket load of money.

                Cheers

                • Chippy - nice one again. VERY much appreciated!

Still not sur which way I am going to go. The way I see it, I have three choices:

                  1. Go dual battrery under the hood. Take care with mounting and hope for the best.

                  2. Get something like a Sidewinder Flyer battery box and shove it in the back.

                  3. Get a second Waeco RAPS-36 and run it together with the one I already have to give me 72Ah. They can be hooked up with a specific cable, which effectively turns two 36Ah batteries into one single 72Ah one. The adantage of this would be cost (more mullah for other toys) and they have a digital volt meter built in whereas boxes like the Flyer only have a four-segment 'indicator'.

Man, how tough can this be...

                  • I'm using a battery tray from offroad down under and it's holding up very well, it hasn't pulled through the gaurd as yet and has been subjected to some pretty savage cape corrugations. It mounts in the usual spots on the gaurd but also has a bracket that mounts up high on the top lip of the gaurd for extra strength.

They only appear to make them for the diesels but you may be able to sneak it into a petrol too (probably need bracket for PS).

                    • After much thinking, I went ahead and had ARB install their dual battery system in the Prado. To be brutally honest, I think the installation costs too much as you'll see. But this is something I don't have much knowledge about and it's questionable if I'd ever get the time to step though doing something like this myself.

First up. I was a bit surprised where they put the 2nd battery.

Honestly I was fully expecting it to go on the drivers side in front of the air conditioner, where most of you have put yours. Talking to the tech, he said that ARB will not put 2nd battery's in the front drivers side due to trouble cracking the mudguard. Of course, that's been discussed at length here and it seems the issue can be overcome. ARB will not do it though.

2nd issue was the smaller sized deep cycle N50EX battery installed. This nearly had me axing the whole thing as I really wanted an N70 sized battery. However, at the end of the day, all it has to do is run the fridge for a few hours while I'm away from the car and a few hours overnight. Any longer and I've got one of those GME generators that were going cheap a little while back. So I went with it.

Third issue was the repositioning of the fuel filter. ARB has clearly made a battery tray specifically for 120's, and has a mounting bracket for the fuel filter. Not such an issue unless you were thinking of putting on an additional fuel filtering system, which I was up until this point. Looking at the whole Diesel engine knock scenario it's not yet clear how this will play out. If Toyota changes the fuel filtering setup as a result of the fuel / injectors issue I may well be in trouble. Time will tell on that front.

Fourth issue. There is now a reasonable amount of weight on the passenger side with 2 batteries there. Thinking about spreading the load weight evenly, I'm unsure how this will affect the ride height on the passenger side going forward.

                      Fifth issue.

For DIY savvy people, there is a good saving to be made

ARB also upgraded the existing wiring to the existing socket in the back and connected it to run off the 2nd batt, so it is always powered now. They also installed one of their "30A single pole sockets" which does indeed look a lot more robust than the Toyo one

So not a complete win in all honesty. But It'll get me going for now and that's the main thing. Hope this is helpful for those considering the ARB path.

Gees, IRON-PAWW, you've really got me thinking now. I recently visited my local ARB with the view to installing a dual battery system from them. The information they gave me suggests they will install a N70 battery, not the N50. They also emphatically stated they would not upgrade existing wiring, only install a new outlet with upgraded wiring. The prices they quoted were similar to yours, even though I was looking at getting a fair few other items too.

I am not sure about the batteries being on the same side or the fuel filter issue you have identified. Will double-check with ARB regarding their intended set up and advise next week.

                          Thanks for the advice.

                          • It'll be interesting to see what your ARB say about the battery position Ntpryce. When I went in a few weeks ago to tee it up, they told me the battery would go in the "usual place" and I just assumed that meant up the front on the drivers side. The tech at my local ARB said no way will they now install batteries there. Too many issues further down the track with damage caused by wear and tear.

I really can't see an N70 going anywhere near the spot they put mine. Definitely double check this point with them. I must admit I clean forgot to question the battery size when I tee'd mine up. Questioned all other aspects of it though.

It'll be interesting too to see what you get charged.

As Zapper says, done is done. And I can now get to thinking what else I can put in that spare battery space. Maybe an air compressor I'm thinking. Should be able to manage that one myself 8). At least I can now get down to the serious business of keeping my drinks cool while I trek up a mountain or something.

I just had the same set up done by ARB in S.A. They use a "smart Solenoid" by Sure Power Industries. They have a web page www.surepower.com I presume this is the same as Iron paww's set up. Sure Power claim to have invented the battery isolator in 1959.
