Re: Redarc BCDC-1220 20amp DC-DC 3 Stage Battery Charger Install

Sorry guys excuse my ignorance but can someone tell me whether the BCDC unit is installed in addition to the Redarc battery isolator or as a replacement for the Redarc battery isolator? I have read through most of the posts on the BCDC unit but it doesn't seemed to be mentioned anywhere? I currently have neither but am just starting down the dual battery road and wondered exactly what I need to install. Thanks in advance.

Add me to the BCDC1220 user group! I've "dumbed down" the existing Redarc SBi12 Smart Solenoid so I can use it for emergency starting and added the BCDC1220 to charge the auxiliary battery. Essentially I have implemented Redarc's "Ultimate Dual Battery setup" (see this link).

            Hi all,.
Altho I didn't buy the same redarc product as the thread is describing. I would just like to tell everyone of another destributor of redarc products.

BATTERY WORLD are resellers. I just bought two batteries and a redarc smart solenoid.. got a good discount buying all 3 together.

            Jeff.

Hi guys - very interesting reading indeed. We have a 120 series 2009 D4D and have a dual battery system installed. The dual is used for a twin outlet at the rear (40L engel (only ever as a fridge not freezer) and occasional inverter or straight to charge phone) and a hard wired GME CB. The battery is a Century N70T 75AH lead acid.

This is the issue - it was all installed April 2010 and by March 2011 the battery was cactus - despite being used all the time for the fridge (always in the car) including camping most weekends (missed 6 weekends in 5 months???) and a 5 week trip thru red centre (13000 kms). I found out that the warranty was only 6 months however after heaps of haggling I got a new replacement. Now 5 months later with same usage (note trip only weeks and 7000 kms) the new replacement is cactus again. Sulphered up again and wont hold a charge. They wont help me again. They told me that 6 months warranty was industry standard (bulldust) and that dual lead acids fail as they are left unused in the car - ...(i.e. used in summer - idle in winter - cactus next summer - so they only warrant 6 months).... hmmmm not in my case

I was told by "dual installer" after first cactus to periodically charge battery with 240v charger as Prado's are the worst for alternator output on the market - so I did a "top up" every month - still cactus after 5 months.

3 months ago I thought of buying an AcDelco 4 stage 240 volt charger - as its got a maintenance cycle involved and can bring batteries "back to life". Bit late for that now but it would have been interesting to have used that charger monthly.

Saw Redarc ad in camper trailer mag and researched- here I am.

So does anyone else has a charging problem like mine (or a battery problem like mine)? Is this common? Has anyone else found this with a Century Would this have happened with a redarc charger under the bonnet of a 120 Prado. I would love to know - I am seriously considering this product!!!

Sorry for the looooooong story guys / gals

Oh and I forgot to mention I have a 100W folding solar panel that I use during summer/spring/autumn each day we are camping to top up the Century.....

Hi DarrylH, there could be a number of reasons why your batteries are see such a short operating life.

Also, as the battery is in your vehicle, then sulfation is not likely to be the cause of their early demise also with the amount of use you are giving your battery, again, sulfation is even less likely to be the cause.

A bit more info if you can.

What type of battery are they?

How low do you discharge them?

How long do you drive for on your return journey?

Is this your Drive Every Day vehicle?

Just an update.... I first started this thread in 2009....

Well over two years old now and still going strong....
and whats more is so is the aux battery...

On another note I have installed two of the 40 amp versions in a mates Vehicle and Caravan...
Absolutly brilliant, and runs his solar as well...

I just noticed Redarc now have a new 25amp version with solar input a reduced output version of the 40amp unit.

                    40 amp info here
                    http://redarc.com.au/products-and-se...attery-charger

will be good for those with solar panels...
