    Re: charging rate

Thanks for the reply Leigh, can't say I've ever been called "Tuddy" before...

As i haven't had the dual batt setup long i haven't experienced any problems yet. my original cranking battery lasted 4 years so I don't believe there is any issues charging.

            Re: charging rate

Ive been on the road for nearly a month now running a fridge and a freezer, plus lights, inverter etc. Installed my LieghW diode before i left and everything is working beautifully. Definately makes a difference according to my scangauge, money well spent i say.

            Cheers Andrew

              Re: charging rate

              Hi All
I have just joined Pradopoint and have brought a 2008 D4D GXL.Used to have a 80 series cruiser (diesel) with a dual battery system (lead acid) run by a 100amp solenoid.I also have a caravan with a 12v battery in the boot. Never had any problem with charging these 2 batterys.
Now with the Prado and the low charge rate I am not sure which way to attack the dual battery system.Do I
              1. Get a $35 Voltage Booster only
              2. Get a Redarc BCDC1220 Charger only
3.Get both the voltage booster and the charger.
              Any ideas would be helpful
              Thanks Hunty

                Re: charging rate

                Hi Hunty,

Providing you run suitable cable with the booster you won't need the charger at all,
                just a good isolator.

                Cheers

                    Re: charging rate

                    Hi Hunty,

Search is your friend... sometimes . In this case, you don't want to search for BCDC-1220 cause the search engine interprets that as +BCDC -1220, which means find matches for BCDC but exclude matches for 1220. Rather you would need to search for BCDC 1220 (no dash).

Anyway, now that we've had a lesson in the idiosyncracies of this search engine...

I suggest reading the BCDC-1220 thread and also the RanOx thread. The pros/cons are fully covered.

                    Cheers,

When you say correct size cable what size do you suggest.
                      Also what type of isolator.
                      Thanks Hunty

Suggested cable size, courtesy of member drivesafe:

Hi AJ120, this is just a quick reference to cable sizes but should help you.

Two batteries mounted side by side, 6mm auto ( 4.5mm2 ) with a 35 amp maximum continuos safe working capacity, 6mm auto is the minimum size but this cable will work fine.

Two batteries mounted anywhere in the engine bay, 8B&S ( 7.9mm2 ) with a 65 amp maximum continuos safe working capacity.

With a battery or two, mounted anywhere else in the vehicle or in a camper trailer or caravan, 6B&S ( 13.5mm2 ) with a 90 amp maximum continuos safe working capacity.

Note, for a single battery mounted in the rear of a vehicle, 10mm2 cable will work, but if you decide to add another battery or down the road you also want to charge a battery in a camper trailer or caravan, then you need to replace the 10mm2, so it makes more sense to run 6B&S in the first place.
                        drivesafe

As for isolators there are many good units on the market, ABR sidewinder, Redarc, Piranha, ARB, Rotronics and I believe drivesafe also markets a good unit but not aware of his brand name maybe
if he's still reading this post or another member can provide info.

                        Cheers

I think I will go with one of your boosters and a Redarc SB112 Isolator Solenoid with 8mm (8B&S) cable between isolator and batterys.Does this sound ok

                                Hi Hunty,

Should be ok but if it was me I would run 6B&S ( 13.5mm2) to the caravan battery to minimise any voltage
drop. Also if you put a fuse box in the back of the car great for running fridges, inverters, compressors etc.

                                Cheers
