Thats Great and I must of missed that reveiw.

I think the Sub you installed is to big for what i'm after I was thinking of one that could fit under the seat while leaving the exsisting head end in.

How did it sound with every thing installed?

Another great PP write-up - thanks McBain.

Just wondering about this myself....I have a Sony XM-1S compact 4 channel amp which im looking at placing either under the driver's or passenger's seat and running the bridged channel to a JBL sub in a box. Both of these were from my old car.

I was contemplating not accessing the wiring harness feeding from the head unit (looks like too much work to get to it) - but hacking into the wiring run to the rear speakers that run near the front sill on both sides of the car. The Sony can take speaker level as an input.

Any thoughts whether this "upgrade" would result in not a very good improvement from stock sound (I have the 6 disc in-dash MP3, bluetooth factory head unit and cannot justify to replace it). Im really only interested to get some real bass - low frequency etc.

      thanks!

Sounds great with the new headunit. it has specific RCA outs for the sub so i think this helps. And the Sub has a sep control for the bass level so i can crank it right up so that even at the lowest volume the back of my seat vibrates (quite soothing) or can turn it almost off so it doesn't thump the back of the seat that the little fella sits in. I think i'd struggle to go back to stock.

The size has only bothered me twice in the 6 months it's been there. both were when i needed to fit the pram in the back as well as some other stuff, and leave enough room for the dog (a lab). but these ratchet things work wonders!

                  Re: speakers

instead of starting up a new thread, i thought i would just revive this one.

replaced my speakers in the doors a couple of weeks ago. i had already put a new headunit in a few months earlier, and the factory speakers weren't cutting the mustard.

this is also posted in my rig build up viewtopic.php?f=38&t=5853

here's some pics of the speaker install. i used 3mm alloy plate. prolly coulda used something else though.
i measured the original speaker mounting points for the adaptor plates. then cut the hole out to mount the speaker.

this is the front doors. the stocko speakers are 20w 6"x9" size.

this is the back doors. the stocko speakers are 17.5w and about a 6.5" size.
it was hard to cut the hole out as i didn't have a 125mm hole saw. rough, yes, i know.
plus, the shape i came up with was based on the factory speakers, and looks a little like transformers too.

this is the factory tweeter and tweeter bracket with the new JVC tweeter in place.
the JVC tweeter was a tight fit, so anything larger will be hard to fit.

this is the rear JVC speaker mounted. the speaker would actually fit inside of the hole in the door. and the JVC is a 6.5" too.

the rear JVC's are handle a max of about 200w and have a rubber surround (good for 4wd'ing)

this is the front speaker. JVC splits and handle a max of about 250w. what i liked about these splits was that there wasn't a crossover unit to try and mount.

this is the factory tweeter location behind the door trim. the JVC tweeter is mounted already.

this is a pic of factory speakers. the tweeters are so small its hard to see them. front speakers are larger and more powerful than the rears.

i have already upgraded the stereo head unit to a Sony unit, and i am running standard factory wiring to the speakers with an 600w amp to power a 12" sub in the back. the difference is outstanding. clearer crisper sound and no distortion higher up in the volume range.

                    Re: speakers

Have a look at the focal Bus 20 powered subwoofers. They are square and very flat
and will fit under the drivers seat. They have a very heavy duty aluminium case
and sound very good for their size. I fitted one of these to my Polaris GPS, in my
case I mounted it on the top of my storage shelves, sounds great!
