  • Re: Bought some air horns today

    Man,

These air horns are great! I am spewin I didnt read this post first to get the 10% off from Online but you get that.

My install was a result of an accumulation of events

The first one was a moderator here was driving down Read St in his Prado minding his own business not aware of my presence, I thought I'd announce my presence by asking my Prado to announce to him but instead I "tweeted" his prado and as a result said moderator didn't realise I was there,
    and then secondly;
on the same trip, an F-150 driver felt he needed to occupy the exact space that I was in, again, a rather pathetic weeping sound emitted from my Prado, which made me feel rather more annoyed because the bloody horn didn't quite reflect the emotion of the moment! ops:

With that, the handbrake was told that the car "needed to grow some balls".... Funny enough, she didn't argue...
The choosing of an installation location was tricky given I wanted as much impact when the horn was given a blast without interfering with other parts (the tranny cooler, the additional tranny cooler i fitted, the stock horns -I retained these as I like the idea of inital false advertising and the factory Thermo fan)

It sits nicely in the middle behind the soveriegn bar on a modified factory bracket

Now the VX has a voice to be reckoned with!

    Terry

          Thanks Chippy,
          Here's my install

Bought my Stebel Nautilus Compact Truck Car Air Horn 12volt 300Hz 110Db from Here $82.50 delivered with 10% "pradoponit" discount

This pick shows I've done like others and just removed the inner Standard horn and re-used the old bracket, works a treat

In this 3rd pick if you look close you can see short black wire from -ve on Stebel earthed to horn mounting bolt. Also Red wire going from +ve on Stebel on it's way back to pin 87 on relay. Also black wire plugged into existing power connector for the old horn on it's way through to pin 85 on the relay

This last pick shows relay that came with Stebel and inline fuse holder i picked up for $8 at Supercrap. You can see Short black wire from pin 86 on relay earthed on relay mounting screw. Also red wire from +ve on main battery + fuse to pin 30 on relay. Honk Honk  FYI i disconnected 2nd standard horn.
Granma now sucking eggs

Big fella in your photo it looks like you have used one of the power connectors and the other one is just hanging their and and i asume you have then run a new earth??
I know i am assuming a lot and i have know idea about electrical things but a i have an air horn at home that i would love to connect up, but when i look at the factory wiring with two power connectors thats were it stops for me. Go back ten years just romove postive and negative terminals and connect to new horn that easy????

            Open to anyone's help!!

Have joined the cause gents, the Stebel Nautilus Compact Truck horn is in transit and will be installed asap. If I see Tony Abbott in traffic, I'll have him soiling those budgie smugglers in no time. btw, I note they have different tones on some of the models, mine was $89, a bit more, but has a deeper, gruntier growl to it. Still got the Pradopoint 10% discount too, even though it said it finished last year. Just typed "Pradopoint" into the promotional code field.

You guys are confusing the hell out of me with moving temp sensors and bashing brackets into shape.

I installed the horn last night, yet to do the wiring. Install was a follows:

                    - Pop out plastic lugs from plastic radiator cover so could get to the mounting bolt for the old horns.
                    - Dettached power connector from left horn.
                    - Removed 13mm bolt that holds bracket to body and removed old left horn completely.
                    - Used a 60mm length of flat bar, hack sawed out a groove for the little metal lug on the body (you'll see it when you look at where the original horns are mounted, it stops the bracket from rotating with only one screw holding it).
                    - Drilled out two holes on the flat bar, one for the body mount, the other for the horn.
                    - Bolted horn to bracket (bolt head goes in horn rebate).
                    - Used original 13mm bolt to reconnect using new bracket.
                    - Replaced plastic radiator cover and lugs.

It is now installed, bonnet closes fine, no bangs or rattles.

Wiring goes in this weekend, will post photos when complete. Then it's time to surprise a few people!!

Well guys, the horns in and was easy as. Had a chat to a mate of mine, (ex NRMA Road Serviceman for 20 years) and he suggested I just run an earth from the new horn straight to the body, and cut the connector off the original horn power straight to the +ve on the new horn. Worked a treat and is now pumping out the decibels.

                        • Re: Bought some air horns today

                          Hi Fredster,

The fact that you can doesn't make it a good idea! The Prado wiring is not designed to run a compressor
for the air horns it is only rated at 10A. ie The standard horns draw less than 10A and circuit is fused
with a 10A fuse and the standard relay is most likely rated at 10A. Air horns running usually draw around
20-30A. It takes 2 to three times the rated current of a fuse for 10 seconds to rupture the fuse. ie 30 amps
for 10 seconds. Under a normal fault situation ie a dead short massive current will flow for a very short time
and the fuse will rupture instantly and no damage will occur to the wiring due to the short time the current
flows. In your situation if you blow your horn for any length of time the current could flow for some time
before the fuse ruptures and possibly burn out the standard horn relay contacts or over heat the wiring.

Much safer to run a fused heavy wire directly from the battery via a heavy duty horn relay as was probably
                          supplied with the horns.

                          Cheers

                            G'day Leigh,

Yep, I see what you mean, gave it to some moron today that overtook me (left hand side!! I was doing the mandatory 40 k's) going through a school zone, almost wiping out two kids crossing at the pedestrian crossing. Lasted a second or so, and 10A fuse blew. Gave him a bloody good scare, and the kids some warning he was coming while it was going though!!
I had already bought the 6mm wiring, so might hook that up tonight. What about the original horn power wire that Chippy said runs to Pin 85, isn't that still at risk re the load??

                            Cheers, Mike

                              Hi Fredster,

Plenty of idiots out there, your airhorns will get plenty of use!

No problems connecting the original horn wire to pin 85 of the relay. The relay
coil will draw well less than 1A.

Just connect one of the original horn wires to 85 and the other to 86.

Then run your new fused power to pin 30 and from 87 to the compress.

PS you should use a relay with either a diode or resistor supressor across the coil.

                              Cheers
