    Re: Second battery location

[quote="drivesafe"]So mumstruk, all the years before sealed batteries came along, when people had nothing else but standard flooded wet cell batteries in their vehicles, there were heaps of people that got covered in battery acid.

Whoa, they used to say that cigarettes were good for you too. I never said anything about heaps of people covered in battery acid. I simply provided the observation that not all motor vehicle accidents where the contents of the battery might leak out are not catastrophic, but it appears that you are the one and only expert on most things.

The reading that I have done and in my experience ( I work in the electrical profession ) a battery needs to be charged with a higher voltage. If you want to argue about .3 of a volt I suggest we get our volt meters tested first and certified by a NATA Accredited Laboratory. If I killed my 120 amp hour deep cycle running the fridge for a few days I would want my expensive battery to recharge as safely and as quickly as possible

Baz just wanted a few ideas from Prado Point members. None of us wanted a lecture or to be preached to about all things according to Drivesafe
150 Vx D4D, Deluxe Arb bar, winch, Hayman Reece Towbar, UBP, P3 Tekonsha, 'n stuff.

      Re: Second battery location

A lecture, you post up some scare mongering based on nothing but your opinion, but if I reply based on easily checked facts, I’m lecturing.

Obviously you have never seen or read of any form of disaster along the lines you are trying to make can happen, otherwise you would have pointed us all to to this info, yet you make no comment about the known potential missile problem that any battery mounted inside a vehicle could cause.

let me guess, you have some other type of battery mounted inside your vehicle so you won’t go there.

So be it. If it takes a lecture to give people honest info then a lecture it is.

Next, your saying everybody's multi meters are out, not yours of cause.

Now who is it you were saying is giving the lectures?

Your correct, Bazza asked a question and you have done everything in your power to muddy the water.

      What a hypocrite.

          Re: Second battery location

And yet another electrical/battery thread decays into name calling - reading through recent electrical threads and those on other forums it is easy to find the common factor.

It is disheartening to see this on Pradopoint. I'm not even going to bother to comment on the technical content but have a I simple message:

Many people have put a lot a effort into making this a great forum, by dragging down discussions to personal attacks you are disrespecting not only the people you are addressing but all those who contribute positively to the forum. If you can't take part in discussions without turning it into a mud slinging match - GO AWAY.

            Re: Second battery location

Leachy, how does you reply help Bazza.

If you have relevant info, for or against using a flooded wet cell battery inside a vehicle, why not post it up for all to see.

Again, when people post up nothing more than opinions being passed off as fact but are nothing more mythical theories, I’ll post up honest info and readers can make up their own minds.

I’ve stated here and on other forums that there is no genuine problem with mounting a flooded wet cell battery inside a vehicle and that doing so will not increase any form of danger levels.

I can’t prove that statement, simply because there are no documented events that show otherwise.

I don’t sell batteries, I have no connection to anyone or any business that does sell batteries so there is no advantage to me one way or the other as to what battery Bazza or anybody else chooses to fit to their vehicle.

BUT, like on many other forums, there is always someone who knows that putting a flooded wet cell battery in a vehicle’s cab will mean the occurrence are going to get covered in acid or blown up.

The problem is that not one of these scare mongers has ever posted info of a single incident where there disaster theory has come to pass.

Bazza, sorry for the side track, but in a nut shell, fitting a battery, ANY type of battery in the rear cargo area has some real benefits over fitting one in the engine bay.

The biggest single benefit is that auxiliary batteries mounted anywhere other than the engine bay tend to last longer than auxiliary batteries mounted in an engine bay.

Furthermore, Bazza, it’s not hard to secure a battery safely in the rear cargo area, both from a secure mounting position and for protecting against any potential acid leaks.

              Re: Second battery location

if ever you need to install a battery inside the cabin just make sure it is secured and its vented out of the vehicle..i was thinking as well of fitting a battery box inside but there is always a doubt about the battery acid spill..if you are worried of acid spill in your engine bay just think of what that acid spill can be in your vehicle's interior.

                Re: Second battery location

Just thought I'd make sure you were aware of ARB's way of doing a dual batt system - they don't use the front headlight mounting space but move a few things around up near the passenger firewall to make room for it. This was due to the cracking problem. Pretty sure this is where I'll put mine. I'm keeping the front spot for my compressor.

P.S. sad that some people haven't realized that Pradopoint has a reputation as a great forum where people don't fly off the handle. Bunch of girls - get over it and if ya can't hack someone's opinion, leave the thread, or the site if need be. Don't make it suck for the rest of us. Ought to be suspended for a few weeks IMO.

                  Re: Second battery location

Australian Army Landrover 110 (Non 6x6 version) has their batteries mounted inside the cabin under the front passenger seat. Move the seat out of the way and remove the cover plate and there is the battery.
I know without constant maintenance, acid spill was a problem with rust etc. But if we made sure the battery clamps were tight along with the battery caps it wasn't a problem unless if someone topped up the electrolyte too much causing acid to overflow out the vent holes.

For me if think mounting under the vehicle would be a good option, centre of gravity etc but there are a few things to consider i.e. sealing it from water (river crossings), ease of access and what to mount it in to name a few.

If I can get 3-4 years out of a battery, mounting it in the engine bay (might even insulate it) then I would be happy with that.

                    Re: Second battery location

                    To mount inside or out?

I myself if I needed to would mount the battery inside the cab, but would would take into account
                    the following:

Use of a vented battery box in my opion is mandatory. Correctly charged batteries won't gas excessively but
I don't want any battery smells in my car under any circumstances car so I would vent the box to outside.

As for acid spill, anyone with sense is going to make sure the battery is properly secured in the
event of an accident and that the battery is installed in a proper battery box. My main concern would
be regular maintenance issues, you only have to look at a few cars and you will see signs of electrolyte spills
around at least one, due to overfilling by careless service personel etc.

Acid spray around the vehicle? I do remember quite a few years back when exide released one of the
first series of no/low maintenance batteries. They had a problem with the welding of the bus bars
inside some of the batteries and this resulted in several batteries exploding. Granted this is
a rare event but history proves it can happen so I if it was me I would be using a well designed, well
sealed and solid vented battery box!

                    Cheers

What I have also noticed is that there is on the left side of the battery there is a breather tube to take away any smell that may arise as a result of recharging. Great idea! No nasty gasses in the cab. It exits under the car somewhere.

                              Re: Second battery location

I went this way and it works well for me.

I have the dual battery system in front. The second battery is mounted front RHS. I keep it to a smaller size ( 75AH ) to reduce the risk of cracking the guard.

I have 8mm2 wire running to the back. There is a distribution panel with cig sockets, Anderson sockets etc, mounted on my DIY storage unit.
I have a couple of sealed lead acid batteries, at around the 24AH mark. ( it varies depending what I can get at the time.) These batteries have short flying leads with Anderson plugs. Also another flying lead with a cig socket, and I made carrying handles from old webbing.
These batteries just sit in a box in the rear storage unit, with plent of ventilation. I always have one charging whilst travelling, via the aformentioned Anderson plug.
In camp, they are light enough to carry so they can come out of the car and are used for lighting, showers etc. It is more convenient than running a lead from the car. ( especially if the car has to leave camp for any reason ).
Also they come out of the car whilst at home, and sit on the charger in float mode. That way we have fully charged batteries every time we go away.
                              Cheers, Wayne

                                Re: Second battery location

Any opinions on where is best to mount the second battery.

Front right hand corner behind the head light or at the fire wall on the passenger side.

Piranha goes for the front right hand side while ARB recommends on the firewall and moving some things around.

Opinions on what brand to get and what battery would be great as well.

                                Thoughts please.
