  • Techstream Help needed - Brisbane

    Good morning PP’ers,

I hope such a request is permissible!!!

I’d like to put out a call to see if there is anyone in the Brisbane area that would have Techstream and would be able to help me with a quick analysis of my car. Am happy to pay in beer!!
am keen to get a full capture of values for the vehicle to help with next decisions regarding a PAINFUL recurring issue.

    Car is:
    - 1kd 2007
    - 213km
    - auto

    Fault:
    - whether hot or cold, there is a fairly significant amount of surging occurring at 2100rpm, 2300rpm and 2400rpm.
    - no issues evident at other rpm ranges
    - repeatable every drive.
    - am concerned that this is damaging the engine.
    - NO fault codes

    I have:
    - checked and cleaned heaps of electrical connections
    - cleaned MAP and MAF sensors and filters, cold start idle values look ok.
    - cleaned EGR valve and manifold (but not the cooler).
    - turbo and stepper replaced at about 190k
    - fuel filters and air filters recently replaced.

    Thoughts on next steps:
    - keen to measure TPS values through the full rev range (hence need for techstream)
    - cross check on fuel delivery pressures (SCV?).
    - check injector values

I would be absolutely grateful for any assistance with accessing techstream and with advice on where to look next.

    kind regards.

More than likely suction control valve.
Happy to help but I'm 900km away and in lockdown still

If it is a suction control valve, here is link to a youtube video that shows the replacement procedure. Apparently there are two different styles of SCV. One is inferior to the updated model.

thanks so kindly for your note.
I’m tending to think the same about it being the SCV. I assume Techstream can identify fuel delivery pressures (or something like that) and that a dodgy SCV would be indicated by some noticeable pressure fluctuations at the RPM points noted earlier.
        Does this sound about right?

Yeah you can monitor target and actual fuel pressure in Techstream, provided you have no other fuel supply issue like an air leak or blockage or rail pressure reg valve fault it should indicate a faulty SCV

              Good evening PP'ers,

I eventually bit the bullet and purchased a cable and Techstream.

Managed to get it working and then did a data log on a short drive.

As mentioned in my original post, the issues i am seeing occur at 2100rpm through to about 2400 rpm.

From the data log, Techstream seems to allow you to view various data streams concurrently, and following

adrian5800 advice, i overlaid a few of the data streams to see who was mis-behaving the most. Ive attached these below and marked up a yellow box around the area of interest. Note that this particular data was captured whilst driving up a gradual incline to ensure consistent load on the engine.

I'm going to call out the SCV here, based on its pretty good behaviour right up to the point of 2100 rpm - then he heads south rather quickly whilst all the others (RPM and target rail pressure) remain as increasing values. I've also included a plot that captures the overall injector volume and this shows decreasing values through this range. This would appear to explain the surging (loss of power) that i am experiencing through this range of RPM.

I guess it would be good to get the thoughts of the more experienced on this site as to whether this behaviour could be something other than the SCV, and perhaps any other observations from the data.

I guess one aspect that still seems to elude me is the readings associated with the Actual Throttle Position - this bugger seems to be doing something completely different to all the other key vitals that we are looking at - thoughts???

Good work. Can I suggest though, the clone Mongoose/MVCI cables are pretty slow to communicate with the ECUs. If you de-select all the parameters you aren't wanting to look at it will vastly increase the sample/refresh rate. See this screenshot - down the bottom it shows the refresh rate at 4781ms (almost 5 secs) with all the parameters on the screen. If you go to only the 4 you have on your screenshots it will change to around 100ms and you'll see much clearer graphing. The red box is the button to go to the select/de-select parameter screen.
I'd redo the test drive and then look at the results.

adrian5800 - you are a genius - I would never have figured this out.
Exactly as you say - the re-fresh rate has been painfully slow during the handful of logs that I’ve captured.
I will re-do the test and re-graph the data.
                  thanks a heap!!!!!
