Have you tried any diferent sizes?

    Cheers
Yes, I'm saying that increasing the size of the cable will increase the voltage at the battery, but this will only be noticeable for a diesel. Although, it wouldn't hurt for a petrol, if you use high consumers.

I wouldn't call it the easy way though, that terminal is a pain to get at!!!

i tested it once a year or so ago, and got about 14.0 o 14.2 at the alternator but only 13.6 or o at the battery which is common for the diesels. Can't remember the figures exactly, I know sapradogxl was there cos I compared with his alternator in the petrol 120 he used to own.

Interesting read, has anyone actually changed out the cable in there D4D to a thicker cable to see if the voltage received at the battery terminal actually did infact increase?

Instead of replacing, it would be easier to add another along the front of the radiator.

A fact to keep in mind, the regulator sets the battery float voltage, the reference point
for the regulator in the diesel is the main busbar in the fuse box.

If you measure the voltage there and it is 13.8V even if you have a .6V drop
between the alternator output terminal and the busbar, putting a thicker
cable or another cable in will not make any difference as the regulator will
simply wind the voltage back to 13.8V again.

The only time a thicker cable would make a difference would be at very high
alternator output levels when the regulator can't maintain the output voltage.

Seems like a lot of work for little gain, booster diode is a lot easier!

          Cheers

Yes it would and surely Toyota would install a cable from the alternator to the battery that could supply 80amps @ 13.2v minimum in any situation...

              Hi guys
I'm by no ways up with the lingo you all talk so please excuse my ignorance. If I have a setup that whilst driving along is drawing a lot of amps, ie normal running gear plus two fridges,on being a Waeco and the other being a dometic in a caravan, would installing a larger alternator be worthwhile for for longevity on the alternator?
              Cheers

I doubt it would make the alternator last any longer, anyway if you are thinking of changing the alternator why not wear out the one you already have first? I regularly run a fridge and a freezer in the Prado as well as charge the camper battery without any issues.

Water and mud will kill the Alternator before anything else.

                Cheers Andrew

I know this thread is a little old but I just wanted to thank mackayvx for his comment. After our 2 day old battery went flat I did a google search and stumbled across this thread. Since we also have a roof mount DVD player (that also never gets used, we have headrest DVD/USB players anyway) I checked it and sure enough it was left on by mistake (by me I think). The battery is on a trickle charger now and we'll see tomorrow how we go but very confident this'll work.

Due to the cluch failing on my original alternator I have recently fitted a replacement 130 amp one (actually the auto electrician fitted it).
The AE was a bit doubtful about the diode I was running so I took it out and replaced the 7.5A fuse.
The Voltage on the new alternator is sitting at 14.2v on idle warm (as mentioned by someone previously).
On the strength of this I have left the diode out and gone back to standard. but I will continue to monitor the voltage at the start battery (D27F Yellowtop)

The alternator doesn't have a clutch?

If the auto electrician fitted a non OEM alternator you most likely won't need the booster!

Hmmm interesting, if you fit a higher A aftermarket alternator, fix 2 issues, low V output and more A. What are the down sides?

                                Hi Leigh,
Auto electrician and Toyota both say it has a clutch to stop its momentium tearing up the serpentine belt.
and the old one sure made a noise when spun up and then slowed down...
so if not a clutch... some sort of back-lash device in the drive ?
                                Edit:
See " alternator decoupler pulleys (ADP)" or one way pulley... seems to be lots on the internet about them.
See interesting vidio (sorry could not find a prado , but it is atleast a toyota)
