I'm in the process of convering my Hella FF1000s to HID. I've been trying to do it in my spare time - should have it finished by the weekend, then I'll take some shots.
Then I plan to do the hi/lo conversion.
Thanks for taking the time to show how you did it.
Cheers,
Drew.

How do you all go when it comes to the legalities of converting halogen to HID headlights? I was reading an article on a WA website that basically said that it should not be done due to it not being legal under the ADR.
I also came across this on a website that specialises in the conversions:
HID headlights conversions are illegal in Australia
except for off-road, motorsport or display purposes.
They are not ADR approved.
To qualify for ADR you will need an automatic headlight washing system
and an auto levelling system.
Use in a road vehicle is at the purchasers own risk.
HIDTechnologies will not be liable/responsible for any fines or defects.
How would you go with your insurance if you were in an accident at night and a subsequent inpsection revealed a modified non compliant conversion? Would this give the insurance compnaies an out to not pay out on the cover?
I would like to do the conversion myself but not at the risk of voiding my insurance.

Yes Mav, I too had thought about this, how do you find a answer to a question like that ?? as it probably comes down to someones interpretation. I cant see them not insuring you unless the lights were the cause or to blame ? . BUT I am not sure if anyone has noticed Driving lights are only ADR approved with 55 watt globes in them, does this then also apply to my driving lights that have 130 watt globes ?
I actually thought about once you install the HID kit, the legal problem and insurance issue.
I believe the current prado factory light is too dim and there are so many cars install HID running around on the street.
I think i will take the risk as a result i order a kit from ebay ...
Bi-Xenon HID HI/LO same as Richo ....
I am still waiting for the kit. i should get it the coming monday or tuesday ...
will let you know how i go with the installation.
just want to double check!
will the after market HID pass the car inspection (pink slip)?
has anyone been through it?
It would not do so here at the MTA pit in Alice, that is one area that they really focus on. I have been rejected for spotties not wired in correctly.
That is the reason I asked my initial question a few posts ago, that and insurance voiding if the car was to be found to be illegaly modified. Insurance companies look for any means not to pay up on policies.

Cheers Phil.
remove the globe part (the carrier - the H4 bit is separate to the actual globe) then put the rubber seal on. Then the globe can be placed back in the carrier and all is sealed and dust and water proof.
Richo
i am in the office now .. will probably look into this once i get home as i am having problem to put the rubber seal back ><
by the way even i bought the same kit as you but the globe seems different.
and the result by first impression yes is definitely brighter but the light beam seems a bit tilted to the top left and quite a bit light scatter at the side
i probably need to work on it to adjust the headlight base to make it better. not sure if you have any of this problem?
The globes I have actually twist apart. you can place the whole globe in the headlamp and mount with the spring clip, then if you twist the back part of the globe about 30 degrees it separates. You can then put the rubber seal on first and place the globe back in.
A bit hard to describe without pictures. I'll try and pull one out and take a few pics over the weekend.
By the way - I thought it couldn't be done either and hacked apart one of the rubber boots.
Does anyone know where I can buy one of these?

I think i get what you mean ... don't worry about pulling one apart for photo.
unfortunately i think my globes are different to your one ...
my end is like alloy ... i am still not sure if i can pull it apart.
Probably a little bit off topic but can anyone explain the difference between fitting 35W HID in Driving lights - ie modifiying some XGT's and fitting 35W HID in the standard headlight assembly?
Is it purely just the enclosure that is making the difference?
Trying to understand if the HID can be mounted in standard headlight assemblies how they can perform so well in Driving lights  :?
